Is it correct that AA is no longer allowing jumpseaters to bring their bags? They need to be checked through to the destination? If so, do you have to pay?
cp

Yes, unfortunately it's true. I can foresee CAs walking off the jets until j/s bags are accomodated.. No, you don't have to pay as a standby traveler, but rest assured we are all up in arms over this one and taking appropriate actions.

Huh... I ride AA exclusively and have been out on leave for the last 3 weeks. Is this something brand new? Is it just "gate checking" your bag?

The APA jumpseat committee just learned about this yesterday afternoon. Only a few clued into current events are aware of it as of this AM.

The rule says JS bags must be check to "final destination". Obviously the clueless -uck that wrote this doesn't know about multi-airline connections. I don't know what happens if JS's have to check in at the outside ticket counter or if it's a gate agent only function.

If the Gate Agent starts playing bag Nazi, don't take it personal, they actually went off on our AA FFDO's for carry "more bags than necessary" before getting their choker chains pulled. A good number of them hate us more than any OAL J-seaters. If possible, get a hold of the Captain. It may take a couple of weeks before this crap gets disseminated through the ranks, and knowing the typical pilot group, you'll be guaranteed to run into a clueless Captain now and then.

The worst thing is they said that OAL riders of this policy shall have their name and employee number forwarded so that the behavior is "corrected" before other employees of that carrier travel on AA.

We are pissed.

Wow! I knew that AA is a pretty hostile environment, but the little bit about forwarding the OAL's info takes the cake. HOLY CRAP!

I don't have any problems checking a bag. Heck... on full flights I prefer it sometimes. But the problems crop up when doing a 2 leg, multi airline commute. I seem to do one of those a month.

As a possible solution from the pilot angle: When TWA was still around, they had a dedicated "crew bag" storage in the front bin of the Mad Dogs. If a jumpseater ever had problems getting a bag on board, the operating crew would grab the jumpseater's bag, run it downstairs and place it there. Reverse the process at the end of the leg and get your bag back. It worked great, and more importantly didn't involve anyone except pilots. The "rampologists" didn't touch anything in the "crew bag" area. Don't know if a fix like this is workable at AA, but just throwing it out there.

As always... thanks for all the rides back and forth. We all appreciate it.

Here is the "new" rule. Read it for yourself.

AA Sucks!

Oh, they'll call your company too and try to get you in trouble if you don't follow the new rule.

To view this for yourself, go into RES and type F*PSM/D6 then type F*1.

For the old policy type F*BAG/CARRYON/CREW

I find it amazing that they still reference TWA...

But what crappy thing to do...who knows where your bag will wind up after a two leg, two airline commute.

Do the bag/s go to the baggage belt outside security????? This is not good news. I hope a solution can be found. Anyhoo thankyou to all the crews at AA for your hospitality, courtesy and professionalism on the many occasions that I have been at your beholding for a ride home. Cheers.

Not to pick on you AA guys...because I know you are just pawns in the stupidity...but maybe we should all just shut down our JS agreements with AA for a month or so and let your management get a real good understanding of how important the JS agreements are to your daily operational stability.

A month worth of crews saying, "we couldn't get to work and a crapload of canceled flights, might just get them to quit dicking around with the JS.

I have seen some of our flights move 20 plus AA jumpseaters on a single flight from FL to NY. I'm sure we put a few on your airplanes as well.

Please let us know if you make any progress on fixing this recent round of stupidity. I count on you guys a fair amount, jumpseating out of Texas...and I always appreciate the ride. Good luck.
