Received this a few minutes ago from APA.

"After accounting for increased utilization of the remaining aircraft and planned pilot retirements, Management is currently projecting the need to furlough between 350 and 450 pilots. The first furloughs are planned for January 6th, and will include 125 pilots, with additional pilots likely to be furloughed over the following four months."

This really sucks!!!

They also stated this: "You can blame fees, fares, or fuel for the losses but the bottom line is that forces external to our control..."

2 of my buddies received calls today informing them that their furlough starts in Jan. Sad but true ...

Title: SPECIAL JETWIRE FOR FRIDAY, OCT. 22, 2004
Brief: LETTER FROM JEFF BRUNDAGE, SR VP - HUMAN RESOURCES
-----------------------------

SPECIAL JETWIRE FOR FRIDAY, OCT. 22, 2004

PLEASE POST ON ALL BULLETIN BOARDS

Following is a letter from Jeff Brundage, Senior Vice President-Human
Resources

Dear Colleague,

As you know, we have for months now been looking at ways to operate more
efficiently and return to profitability. However, the announcement that
we lost $214 million for the third quarter tells us that despite our
success in lowering costs, some circumstances that greatly impact us, most
notably fuel, are out of our control. Unless things change significantly,
we know we are in for a difficult winter.

We are meeting this challenge with two initiatives that, unfortunately,
will result in the loss of jobs for some of our colleagues. First, we are
shrinking our domestic schedule by approximately 5 percent during the
first quarter of 2005. Also, our simplification test that ran this summer
in Chicago showed the potential to save millions. For this reason, we
will implement it throughout our system.

Although we know that all work groups will be affected by these and other
actions, we don't yet have complete information on the impact to each
group. Here are the reductions that have been communicated to the
affected work groups so far:

The Kansas City Maintenance Base will be reduced by between 300 and 400
maintenance positions and St. Louis Line Maintenance by between 200 and
250. We expect furlough notices to be issued commencing mid-November.
Additional reductions will occur in Line Maintenance throughout the
system, but they have not yet been determined.

We anticipate furloughing up to 450 pilots by the summer of 2005. The
first 125 will be furloughed on Jan. 6.

We know there will be downsizing at some of our airports, and we are
working through which locations and how many Customer Service positions
will be impacted. We will know more when the 2005 schedule is finalized.

Due to attrition, retirements, and planned flying levels, we plan to make
Flight Attendant adjustments through voluntary leaves beginning in
January.

In addition to almost 400 management and support staff positions
eliminated so far this year, we will make further staffing reductions,
which we are now evaluating, as a result of these initiatives.

Although we do not yet have all the answers you are looking for, we think
it is important to tell you what we know at this time. As more
information becomes available, we will quickly share it with you.

Thank you for your continuing commitment to our customers and our company
through this difficult time.

I am curious also. Does any American or TWAA pilot know if in fact they were to furlough the 450 pilots they say they will how junior that pilot would be in terms of DOH. My brother-in-law has been with them four 5 years but I hate to ask him this question.

AA guy - Hired April 1999
TWA guy - Hired Jun 1988

Do you know what the date of hire of the current junior pilot is?
The number is a moving target based on the number of pilots who took MLOA or a PLOA. The company wants 450 currently flying pilots furloughed. According to what I hear that makes the most sr pilot an Oct or Nov of 1999 new hire.

Really wanna know?
The lack of mainline pilot support for ALL regional pilots has brought this upon themselves. Do the math, avg. mainline pilot $100k+ a year, avg regional pilot $35k a year. This is not some mystery, it's basic econ 101.
With labor costs being so large a portion of the cost of doing business, mgmt. will do anything it can to reduce costs, laywers to break contracts, bankruptcy laywers are all cheaper than honoring contracts. Expect the trend to continue until the pilot pay scales(major&regional reach equilibrium. I expect regional pay scales to increase a small amount, I expect major pay scales to decrease a very large amount(to my great sorrow). Until true pilot unity becomes a reality, expect the whipsawing to increase and payscales to continue shrinking.
Wish it wasn't so...

thanks for the info.

Just wondering, what hire date is the bottom of the list right now?

Eagle hiring is about to come to a grinding halt.

They will have to continue hiring to fill the 2-3 ERJ's arriving through 2005. The flowback will fill up the left seat of those planes, though.

That is unless the financing gets yanked for the rest of the ERJ's...TC

They are already reducing previously planned class sizes.

Sorry, Med. This whole thing sucks.TC
