American Airlines Eyes Beijing Service
AP
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - American Airlines said Thursday it has applied to fly nonstop to Beijing from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, beginning March 25.
The world's largest airline filed its application with the Department of Transportation, hoping to use a 245-seat Boeing 777 jet on the daily route from its largest hub. American already offers service to Shanghai from Chicago.
"We're acting on our long-standing desire to increase American's presence in the burgeoning China market," American Chairman and Chief Executive Gerard J. Arpey said in a statement.
International routes have been some of the airline industry's most profitable, as travelers heading overseas are typically willing to pay higher fares, analysts say.
Beijing would be American's 32nd international destination from its Dallas hub, the airline said.
Shares of American's parent, AMR Corp., fell 13 cents to $24.49 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
