I had a guy the same way... war vet that figured his time over there gave him a lifetime pass to do whatever he pleased. He was very cavalier with the rules and regs that the flightschool enforced on everyone else. It ended up being another former student/renter who was also a Nam vet that set the guy straight. They damn sure deserve our respect only up to the point where they lose it... and sounds like he's headed in that direction. Yeah maybe he was trying to save face, but as was previously stated, smoking around the planes is a no-brainer that shouldn't require explanation. If it was something like using profanity or other decorum i'd say let it slide, but if reckless behavior continues, i wouldn't fly with him.

Smoking around an airplane? wtf, have you not flown anything older than 10 years old? Most everything I've flown has god damn ash trays built into the plane. Somethin tells me it's not going to hurt anything...

Haha...good point... but that's back when they thought cigarettes had vitamin C, lead based paints looked great on the walls of a kid's bedroom, asbestos doubled as pillow stuffing...

oh the times, they are-a-changin

Just for an update the guy came back to the airport the other day to let me know that he was denied his medical certificate. He went on to explain why and it was for the same reason i suspected.

Good eye. Psychologists make more money than most pilots. Anyway, that just goes to show you that you can never be too careful.
