Yeah...

Install the Flash Player...

You won't have any problems by choosing to install the player. It will help you to enjoy millions of websites that use flash.

Just go with the download.

Um.. install macromedia flash player?

I cannot find it in the directory nor can I find it under Add/Remove.

Install the Flash Player...

I don't want it based on the principle that this company uses the in-your-face obnoxious advertising. They should have a "Don't ask me again." option.

So, back to the original question; Does anyone know how to get rid of this P.O.S.?

Some sort of download perhaps?

Thanks

I think I can sympathize with your reasoning. However, not having flash capability will certainly hamper your web experience. This does not just apply to your visits here, with the cool moving ads, but many other places that increasingly use flash as a method of making their sites have "pop."

Even if you were to pull flash off your computer completely, I doubt if there is a utility that would suppress the macromedia (or any other vendor) window that opens to ask if you want to download the software. That said, in computing, as soon you say something can't be done, someone offers a utility that will do just that. Check around on the tech sites and see if there is an easy solution for your needs. Beware of freeware, since those programs often carry adware, trojan horse programs that change your home page or cause pop-ups.

Kim Komando has a list of adware-free freeware, but I don't think that there is a utility that would supprtess the download permission window.

Nobody should have to install flash if they don't want to. It's a bloated, slow format that eats resources. I hate websites that use flash. I look at a website to get information (usually), not to see some stupid animation that wastes my time.

I think the culprit is the new ads from the folks at Log Book Pro.

I bit the bullet and did it.

However, their ads are slowing my computer down big time. It is my on the road clunker and their ads are ANNOYING. There is no way to stop the flash.

I wish the mod would consider the resources these two ads are taking up on slower computers.

Hey I started the download, then canceled it, and the annoying pop-ups stopped.

Logbook Pro and AVCataloger are the flash stuff. They are a small for flash ads and their server is pretty good.

What specs you have on your computer? It shouldn't be slowing down anything over 1 Ghz/256mb. Also, you might try the three finger salute to see what you are running in the backround (if you are XP, try processes instead of applications. Anything under your username that isn't 'explorer' can be safely stopped).

Yeah, I *know* I could just install the stupid thing. But as many have pointed out, it's just another piece of BS that I don't have any real use for. And believe it or not, some of us are still using old Pentium IIs with none-too-fast dial-up. Things are slow enough already!

It works nicely.

Before we complain about the "Flash Advertisements" Let's remmember, it's their revenue whether big or small that helps keeping this board FREE and around.

1. Add flightinfo.com to the "restricted zone" in ie.
2. disable almost everything in the settings for "restricted zone sites.
3.close and reopen ie.
4. now play with enabling each option until you can still use flightinfo, but don't see the prompts anymore. Remember to close and reopen ie each time.

I think the setting is under one of the ActiveX controls but am unsure and your version fie will vary.

What webbrowser you guys using? I have IE 6.0 SP1 but I have access to others and could guide you through their process.

If you really want to get rid of the ads, go Tools -> internet options -> advanced -> "Enable Install on Demand (other)" (remove the checkmark). Then close out all IE webbrowsers and have fun. I *think* this is the option that disables non-asked for plugins.

Unchecking Tools -> internet options -> advanced -> "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" would prevent the flash files from being read (I think, never really tried it)

Disabling Javascript would also do it but I think that would f*ck up the posting to the forums. It is a last resort.

If you try any of these, please leave some feedback (like which worked, which didn't, ect). I *think* these will work but I might be mistaken...

PS: A P2 and a 56k modem isn't acceptable IMHO. DSL/cable is now almost as cheap as 56k in most areas. This is especially true if you currently get cable TV. They also have deals on computers for $400 at best buy and other places sometimes. You will see the difference in speed! Plus if you want to learn a little more and spend some time, build your own computer you can spend < $400 for a computer with the same specs as one on the best buy shelf selling for $1000.

Nice thought, but it is hard to drag a DSL line around with you on the road:)

Yeah, I understand these ads help pay for this site. However, that doesn't excuse the flash designer from writting his stuff for the lowest common denomentor. At least that is how web pages should be designed.

I have found that most hotels have free wireless access but they don't advertize it. Plus you have bookstores and other places putting in access too.
