TO: ALL PILOTS
FROM: SANTA CLAUSE
SUBJECT: PILOT DUTIES AND ROLE TITLES

There appears to be some confusion over the latest procedural changes regarding pilot duties and role titles during line operations.

The landing pilot is initially and normally the handling pilot and will handle the takeoff and landing. However, for descent in role reversal he is the non-handling landing pilot. For taxi and until 80 knots on the takeoff run, the handling pilot will be the non-landing pilot, when the handling non-landing pilot will then hand the handling to the landing pilot at 80 knots.

The non-landing ( non-handling as the landing pilot is handling ) pilot reads the checklists to the handling landing pilot until after the "Descent checklist" completion, when the handling landing pilot, hands the handling, to the the non-handling, non-handling,non-landing pilot, who then becomes the handling non-landing pilot.

The landing pilot is normally the non-handling pilot until "Minimums" or "Minimums holding" call. At that time, the handling non-landing pilot hands the handling to the non-handling pilot, unless the latter calls "GO-Around". In this case, the handling non-landing pilot then continues handling and the non-handling landing pilot continues non-handling until the next "Minimums" or "Minimums holding" call.

I hope this clears up any remaining confusion. As always, please contact a flight manager if you have any questions.
