I know a guy who almost landed on a taxi-way (ahem...) in low visibility conditions once. Its like landing gear up...those who have and those who will. Its a shame they will most likely pay for their error with their careers....it is fortunate they didn't pay with their lives.

Even though this one is off the scale for carelessness and potential drama, I think asap will get them off the hook...no criminal intent, no bent metal (or peeps).

There's no way that this incident is a single source incident, but there's still a chance that it would be accepted assuming that a report was filed within 24 hours of the landing. I kind of doubt that the FAA will be feeling very warm and fuzzy about such a highly publicized issue though. I hope that is not the case, as I would really like to know what events led up to the landing, and if the FAA goes after the pilots, they would have no incentive to talk.

The thing I cant figure out is what reg says you have to call the control tower if you miss the runway?...and what if your dead cuz you missed the runway?

What if the sun was reflecting off of all those glass houses? I hear that can be almost blinding.

For all of the "experts" here let me clear up a few things. In the 10 years I've been flying in and out of EWR I'll say that the circle 29 can be difficult. I think I can safely say I've done many more than most here and I certainly see how it could have happened. And 6pm on Sat, before the time change they were flying into the sunset or a dusk colored horizon.

The glass houses around you whipper-snappers amaze me.

Is this the taxiway between 4L and R? can you imagine landing on a taxi way and then clearing onto the runway.

I truly hate that saying.....Landing gear up is not something that is inevitable and neither is landing on a taxi-way.

Sure there are plenty of pilot who finished there careers with out doing either.

Maybe not. We have a pair here at ASA that did the same in ATL a couple of years ago. They even took the high speed to exit the "runway", putting them back onto.....yup, the runway. As far as I know, both are still flying. As others have said, all should use caution.

757's are so cool! How many other planes that fracking big could you put on a TAXIWAY?

Sweet!

Suck this airbus!

They should get a medal for proving the quality of good ol' Boeing equipment

Thank goodness it was a "Mainline" Continental pilot that made this blunder.

Had it been any Regional airline pilot you would never hear the end of "Those inexperienced pilots" type news articles.

Those who think they can't make these same mistakes are doomed to do so. It can happen to all of us and being constantly vilgilant is the best way to reduce the chance. But even with the best, it can still happen.
