737 type funding

I was talking with a new SWA FO at the airport and he was telling me about funding that was available to furloughed pilots to obtain their type. Does anyone know any more specific info about this program?

Yes it is called WIA( Workforce Investment Act ) I got my 737 type last year and tried to qualify for the funding-very difficult to get depending on your state.

How much of the $7k does it cover?

You know once again it goes by state and usually the state requires all training to be done in state. In other words the place you get your type rating in probally has to be where you reside. TX. CO, N.C., FL, AZ-these are the states that I am familar with that have 737 type programs.

What state do you live in?

I live in NJ and got the funding through PA, where I had been based before I got furloughed. The amount of funding varies state to state -- in PA it was covered at 100%.

Also, different state WIA programs only approve certain schools. A school which is approved for WIA funding in one state may not be approved for funding in another state. A very bureaucratic system, to say the least.

Incidentally, I completed my 737 type rating training in Texas, at Higher Power Aviation. The training does not necessarily have to be done in the state which provides the funding.
