I had a quick turn through White Plaines September 2nd and I saw a 737 parked on the ramp, with the words 737-800 printed on the fuselage, but it had no winglets.

Thought all 738s had winglets on them... Any 73 guys out there want to enlighten me?

Winglets were designed for the BBJ series and are standard on those models.

The only US airline I know of with winglets on ALL of their -800s is ATA. Continental has a few. Delta and AA's do not have them. Winglets are options for NON-BBJ -700/800s.

Only one of our aircraft has winglets N734MA, the rest are straight wings. Basically the winglet lets you fly higher with a given load resulting in saving more fuel. If you don't fly the airplane high and take it to the max afforded by the FMC then the winglets become just pretty. The winglets also cause a nasty float on landing, the straight wing lands like a real airplane.
