So...if you don't demonstrate instrument proficiency on the type ride...you get the type rating but for "VFR only". M'kay...

1. Do you really need to do the whole checkride again? or just the instrument proficiency parts?

2. Does this count as a pass or a fail for the instructor that endorsed the checkride?

You might try reading 61.63(d)(5) again.

Why would a CFI be penalized because someone wants a type rating in an aircraft where

"the aircraft's type certificate makes the aircraft incapable of operating under instrument flight rules"

?

hmmm...excellent point...I can't imagine why someone would want one, but if the reg is there, I'm assuming someone has before...

I guess after a few hours of reading Pt 43 and 61 the words just all start running together...

So does he/she need to retake the whole practical test really or in practice do the examiners usually just do the instrument portion? Not really a regulatory question...just a curiosity one...

The CFI would not be penalized because the applicant decides not to take the instrument portion of the checkride. However, except for a circumstance that I can not imagine, most instrument rated pilots will keep their instrument priviledges for their new rating.

This usually only occurs when a pilot is not instrument rated. (I.E. a pilot adding a multi-engine to their single engine will get a VFR limitation on their ticket until/unless they take their IFR checkride in a multi-engine airplane.

Now, if during the checkride the insturment pilot keeping his instrument privledges fails the approach or whatever, then the whole checkride is a bust.

It's really kind of a funny regulation since we're talking about VFR-only aircraft anyway.

But, there are pilots who have ASEL and AMEL ratings with the AMEL limited to VFR-only, and the practice has been to require only the performance of the missing tasks to remove the restriction. My guess is that the same policy would apply here.
