Five people, four of them from metro Atlanta, were killed Monday night in a plane crash near Waco, Texas.
The plane's flight began Monday afternoon at Tara Field in Henry County south of Atlanta, stopped in Jackson, Miss., for supplies and was going to Waco when it encountered bad weather.
The pilot had filed a flight plan to initially fly from Tara Field to Monroe, La., but was diverted to Jackson earlier in the day, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking website.
The pilot radioed the tower shortly before crashing around 10 p.m. Central Time in a rural area about an hour from Waco.
Two men, a woman, a girl, 13, and a boy, 2, were killed in the crash, authorities said.
Four of those killed were from the Atlanta area, according to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Ernest Contreras. He said the pilot was from Texas and the other four on board were from metro Atlanta.
The identities of the deceased were being withheld until relatives could be notified, but authorities said all five have the same last name.
The plane, a Piper Saratoga, was registered to a Stockbridge man.
