Despite a loud and resounding voice inside saying, "Move on; it's never going to end. Drop it!" I feel a need to ensure my opinion is understood (but not necessarily agreed with).
Flyairjason:
I am not quite sure from where you are drawing your assumption that I'm 'anti-American'. I assume, from what little evidence there is, that you are making your remarks based on a quote from me which is now contained in deez_nutz2000's signature. Please be aware that the 'quote' is incomplete and edited to suit deez_nutz2000's position. I stated that I was sometimes embarrassed to be an American based on deez_nutz2000 and others' behavior in another thread. He and others were being profane, vulgar, immature and bigoted. However, given that deez_nutz2000 used 'editoral license' to cut and type the message and its context, I can certainly see how you may disapprove of my comments. I was not speaking of the military or government when I spoke of occasional 'embarassment'; it instead resulted from the behavior of people like deez_nutz2000 who are often louder and more visible than the people who truly represent the stock from which this country is made. But just as I can be sometimes embarrassed to be American from others' behavior, I can sometimes be embarrassed to be white, in my twenties, from the South, a flight attendant, a blond, overweight or a plethora of other things. Perhaps I let 'others' effect too much how I feel about myself; perhaps 'concerned' would have been a better adjective. In any case, in the previous thread from which this entire 'discussion' is based, I quite clearly laid out my views on the government and other topics, so despite your request, I see no need to do it again now to a new comer to the conversation. My apologies.
All:
I feel some clarification in general on my part may be needed, although I'm certain that it will only go to bring more scrutiny and rebuke.
I love the United States. I was born and reared in one of the finest communities in the country. I was exposed to military tradition through my family (my grandfather was a Command Sergeant Major E-9 in the US Army, having served honorably in WWII and Korea) and earned a great appreciation for the sacrifice that thousands of men and women have made for all of us and for generations to come. I was even honored enough to serve as a Congressional Page for the US House in DC; I met everyone from Gingrich and Frist to Clinton and Mother Teresa. I gained an amazing insight into the innerworkings of government and grew a desire to serve my nation. Most importantly, I learned throughout my youth that dissent is not only a right guaranteed to all Americans, but it's a responsibility for those Americans aware of a wrong with the 'status quo'.
However, all this experience and love does not make me blind. I feel, as do many millions of others, that there are many things in the country that are going wrong. Do I think America is worst thing the world? Certainly not! Do I think France, China, Barbados or one of a 190 other countries are any better? Absolutely not! Every country has its virtues. Every country has its vices. NO COUNTRY IS PERFECT. Do I want to go live in another country? Honestly, no. I'd prefer to stay in the United States and continue to advocate those policies and agendas I feel that will help to make this country a better place.
Do I hate Bush? No. Do I strongly disagree with many of his policies? Yes. Do I love Kerry? NO. Do I feel some of his policies (those of which he has defined to date) are more inline with mine? Yes. Truthfully, I admire some of Bush's policies and detest many of Kerry's. Unfortunately, as has become the norm in American politics, when it comes to electing a public official, it's a question of choosing the better of two evils. I don't think America will come to an end if Bush is re-elected... nor if Kerry is elected. I do not yet know for whom I will vote, however, more importantly, life will go on.
Sadly, despite all that I've just typed, many of you will feel the need to throw a generalized, trite sterotype upon me whenever I voice my view on a singular subject (i.e. deez_nutz's 'communist terrorist-sympathizer fag' remarks). It's unfortunate that many on this board feel the need to get personal and banter fervently over a simple message board topic; I would presume that were we speaking face-to-face, all of our words would be noticeably more diplomatic (there's something to say for cyber anonymity). While I appreciate the opportunity this forum and others give me to discuss various topics, it depresses me that so often it comes name-calling and finger-pointing. Perhaps, one day, we can all rise to a more civil level of debate.
Well, it's almost 5am and I've got much to do tomorrow (today), so I ought to retire. I wish that all of you have a pleasant day and I look forward to continuing this colloquium in the future.
