Anyone ever been in there, especially during an "event" weekend like the one coming up? I'm going to the United States Grand Prix there Friday through Sunday. Haven't done any research yet (much less purchased the sectional), but wondering whether anyone has flown in there and what the most convenient alternates might be?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Mt. Comfort

Although it's a 25 mile ride from Downtown Indianapolis, Mt. Comfort airport is a nice, quiet field with a super clean and new FBO facility and plenty of parking. It's worth keeping in mind as an alternate. Enjoy the races!

I last flew into Speedway about 3-4 years ago and it was a dump back then. I'm not sure how it is now. I believe they put in a newer runway a year or two ago, so it might be better.

I agree with what Rerouted said. Mt. Comfort might be a nice alternate. Very nice new facilities with a lot of room. Greenwood Airport might be a consideration as well. They have a new FBO there, about a year or so old and plenty of parking. Both are about 20-25 minutes from the Speedway.

Good Luck!

I'm not positive, but I believe that the speedway (3SY) airport has been closed. A new airport was recently built a little further to the west (not sure of the identifier). Your best bets are Eagle Creek (EYE) which is very close to the speedway and alot of the hotels or possibly Greenwood (HFY), Mt. Comfort (MQJ) or Indianapolis Metro (UMP)

3SY is no more....

According to the VFR sectional I purchased today, 3SY is no more. Too bad, as I recall it was right nearby.

Thanks for the responses!!!

Even during "peak" times of the year IND really isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Raytheon does a nice job at the busier times during events and delays are always very minimal. Courtesy cars are always there and I have never had a problem even during the _00.

Rick's Boatyard has some of the best pork chops I have ever eaten and since I hate pork that says something... (only a 10 minute drive from IND) v e r y good seafood as well

Eagle Creek (Sp?) is also a nice airport to fly into and is pretty convenient to most of the major attractions.
