Does anybody know how the new runway is working out? Also, what exactly was the purpose of a 16,000' runway? I had heard that DEN was trying to get more trans-oceanic flights and needed a longer runway for summer days. However, I was talking to somebody that thought all the runway in the world would not matter because 747's and other heavies were tire speed limited on takeoff, not runway length limited.

To my knowledge, there are only 2 international flights (not Canada/Mexico) out of DEN...Lufthansa to FRA and British Air to LHR. Is this still the case?

All I can say about the need for a longer runway is we took off the other day in a full CRJ in the afternoon flaps 8 and (coming from a sea level domicile) we ate up way more of 17 than I would have liked:

"80 kts."
"Checked"

(time passes, airspeed stagnates)

"V1"

(time slowly passes, aircraft wobbles on its narrow gear)

"Rotate"

I had a layover in DEN last Xmas and went up in the tower. I know the controllers said it was to assist heavier aircraft on summer days at the higher altitudes for the oceanic routes etc....
The runway is also heated for the winter! Pretty cool!
