Hi,

I am currently a weekend CFI with a full time job in finance (9 to 5 kind of deal). All of my 300 hours of dual given is primary instruction and I would like to take the next step by obtaining the CFII. I am looking for a very structured, intense program that would allow me to obtain this rating in about 3 to 4 days total. All of my prior certificates and ratings were obtained through the local mom and pop FBOs. What are your experiences with the rating mills and various private individuals offering these courses? Does AllATPs offer single engine CFII? I am 65% current right now, and would probably need to fly a few approaches in a 172 before starting training.

All opinions welcome.

Thanks

This link takes you to the CFII and MEI add-on page. I did all of my CFI training at ATP and really enjoyed it. It was very intense, but for the value and time it is hard to beat. The cost of the add-on program is $1995 and you get an MEI and CFII, this is probably less than you would spend on the CFII alone at other places. I don't work for ATP nor do I want to right now so I am not trying to sell the program, just my opinion.

My budget "was" about $2,000 all-together, and I am currently not multi engine rated.

Going to ATP would involve first obtaining my multi rating ($2,000) and then the add-on. Counting DE fees that’s about $4,600.

Do you know if I absolutely have to take the 15 hour MEI-II program, rather than the standard one? According to my math, I should have 10 hours ME by the time my multi rating is done and another 7 after the MEI-II. So that puts me right around 9.5 ME PIC, 5.5 hours short of the 15 hour PIC requirement to teach. Could anyone who went to ATP elaborate on this?

Thanks

Just shoot them an E-mail. ATP has always replied fast to my emails.

Why not just do it at the place you're at now? You could do itover the course of a few weekends. Work on some stuff over theweekend, if it's good, get the sign-off and schedule for the nextweekend...then fly once more before the check ride.

If you're proficient with instruments it shouldn't take too long...

ATP has both the II and MEI as a 2 day blitz course. I believe they do them both in the Seminole as your II is not dependant on single or multiengine. Each runs about $1000 + $300 checkride. or $1600 +$600 for both.

Right, but my question is (ATP has yet to respond to my e-mail):
Based on everyone's experience, is the 15 hour MEI-II course mandatory for those lacking 15 ME PIC? I know I have to have 15 hours PIC in the make and model to give dual (FARs), but not to obtain the certificates. So, theoretically, I just have to take the bare minimum MEI-II course ($2,000)

Thanks

61.183(j) requires 15hrs to add the rating to your CFI certificate.

You need 5 hours in type to instruct (give dual) in a multiengine airplane or helicopter after the rating is on your CFI cert.
