The only downfall with an online degree program (at least the one I went through) was the cost. The classes were more expensive online than if taken on campus??? However, not dealing with school parking, parking tickets and hippie chicks in subaru's; priceless.

Lets face it almost everyone has a degree, they are not that hard to get, and therefore most people being hired have degrees. Check out these statistics, if 97% of the applicants applying at the majors have college degrees, it would follow that 97% of pilots hired would have college degrees. On the other side if only 3% of the pilots applying did not have degrees, and only made up 3% of those being hired. Why did they get hired? Quaility TJ PIC. Degrees open doors quaility, TJ PIC gets you the job. The chances of being hired would be the same.

We all know that the degree is not just there to get hired at an airline. I would like to see what one does without a medical at the age of 45 with 5000 jet PIC, without savings, and without a degree or even with a 2 years degree. You may find a non aviation job, but you will not make much. Going without a degree is kind of like gambling, but on the other hand if you are getting old you are screwed regardless. With or without a degree... so I guess it is always a bit like gambling.

I know I'll keep studying for my own satisfaction. Doing it online makes it even comfortable.

GED then went back to get traditional H.S. diploma. Hired at regional. Now at jetBlue. I have a good friend at UPS with no degree hired in 2001. It's all about networking.

To answer the original ?, no you do not need a degree to get on at a regional or any other flying job at any level. (unless the employer requires it.) There are many pilot at all levels of this industry and at times in the military flying without degrees.

The opposite is also true, many guys at all levels in aviation with 2 year, 4 year, MBA's and PHD's degrees in areas ranging from basket weaving to super atomic mad scientist engineering.

My piticular airline has a guy who never completed HS to guuys with masters degrees (and at one time there was a SD330 fo with a PHD in engineering).

Generally the bulk of guys getting on at the regional and major level have some kind of 2 to 4 year degree. The reason being that it shows the HR dept that this guy can be tought and process infor mation in a clasroom environment. Read he/she has demonstrated similar skills required to get thru new hire training.

As for what type of degree to get the general cunsensus around here seems to be in something that you like outside of aviation that you can fall back on if furloughed or loss of medical or something like that.

I think it depends on who you talk to.

Most people on this board say "get a degree."

This is true for those that don't know anyone at their employer of choice.

But in the real world.

Besides, I've never understood the reasoning that "If i get furloughed, I'll just go work for Boeing with my aerospace engineering degree."

Finding another job like that is as hard or harder than finding another pilot job!

I'm getting a degree(only a two year).

But my fallback will always be driving. (always a driving job out there).

I'd start making about the same or more $$$ as a driver anyway...
