Second, you're right, I doubt that would go over too well on a military forum. I remember reading an account of an Eagle driver who got into a spiral dive and made the decision to punch out at 10,000ft. He actually left the plane at 3,800ft due to his decent rate. Had he "tried to save it", he'd be dead.

I am not slighting military pilots, or civillian pilots, who must eject. Some airplanes leave one no choice under certain conditions, hence the reason for the seat. Ejection seats have saved a lot of lives.

There's also a lot to be said for those who have never had one available, who know that they're going to land the aircraft or die trying, because they have no choice. These are the ones who understand the true foolishness of pulling a panic button when the airplane can properly be landed...a simple, light airplane such as the Cirrus, for example.

So long as the BRS is perceived and purchased as a stupidity-backup and panic button, it can only be relegated to the status of gimmick.

An ejection seat is a tool.

What Cessna, Piper, Mooney, etc. really needs to do is make a new plane.

However, it is too late. They are copying the failed Detroit model of the 50s-70s: Make whatever $hit the company feels like and market it to the masses. That is why we buy Hondas and Toyotas. It is just recently that GM has come to their senses and is actually trying to be #1 again, with a brand new car design.

Piper and Cessna, I fear, are goners when the likes of Toyota step in with their mass produced, high quality, relatively low-cost airplane.

It is a shame that we were #1 in aviation, and now we're losing our place to upstarts. It just goes to show that you can't keep producing the Model T and 172 forever. Someone will show up with a new and better product and blow you out of the water.

Ok, those that are getting all excited about 172 and 182 bashing, proclaiming that Cessna is behind the times.. It all depends what you want from an airplane.
I have a '59 172, and we have 2 more similar to it here at the airport (a 59 and 56). We also have a 56 182, and I have to say that those are some of the best d@mn airplanes ever made. Why?? they're not flashy or super fast - they're not "high tech" or "advanced by any measure.. BUT: just about anyone can fly them - beginning students are able to fly the 172 after just a few hours.. it is the window into the aviation world! They are mechanically simple and reliable - the man who owns this place has about 7000 hours in light airplanes - primarily 172's, and has never had a forced landing as far as I know - I am going on over 1000 hours in my 172, never any mechanical problems that created any kind of emergency- short of carb ice where I made a precautionary landing at the nearest airport.
Is the cirrus a great airplane? Yes absolutely - but how will that sleek composite frame look in 40 years of being outside?? At the end of the day, I'd rather have a proven, reliable airplane than anything else.
I will say however, that the new cessna's are pretty overpriced, but that's more to do with liability than anything else as far as I know.

You're right, an older 172 or 182 makes a great value compared to *any* new airplane.

But we're talking about new planes.

As an example, a loaded 172SP will run you $209K. A Cirrus SR-20 will run you $229K with a glass cockpit.

Yes, some people do still buy the 172SP at that price, but Cirrus recently passed Cessna in new light single engine sales this past summer. They sold over 50 airplanes in July alone, a record for them.

Cessna isn't going away tomorrow, but they do need a new airframe at some point if they wish to be in this game long term.

This intrigues me...

I learned how to fly in 1990...in a 150 built in 1967. Now my oldest son will be old enough to get his PPL in 2019. Is a fifty-two year old single-engine Cessna (or any light single piston, for that matter) even going to be relevant to flight training by then?

Ever read Stick and Rudder by Wolfgang Langwiesche? It's copyright 1944 but just as relevant today as it was back then - I think as long as an airplane flies for the same reason, then learning to fly will include the same basic concepts.. Sure, the avionics keep changing, but basic flight training is about flying the airplane, not running a computer. Once you know how to fly you can run a computer any day.. I bet in 2050 the avionics will be totally unimaginably powerful, but the basic skills of flight, or "art of flight" will remain the same..

Now that you mention it, yes, I have. I kept a copy of it around while I was instructing at FlightSafety. It was an excellent way of cleaning the FSI hogwash out of my head. :D

I tell ya, though, it's going to be a big step, someday, to go from a 1976 Cessna 152 to a 2021 Boeing-Mitsubishi 797!

Toyota have put their aviation plans on the backburner, turned the heat way down, and let go probably half of their aviation team. Don't get your hopes up over flying a Toyota anytime soon.
