135 Training Contracts?

Is it normal to have to sign a 24mo training contract for 135 initial type training? I recently signed the dotted line and was curious if this is the norm or what? I am not having "buyers remorse" or anything, just wondering what the industry standards are....

While were playing 20 questions.........Whats the salary range for a CE-750 f/o?

Contracts

More and more are doing it. We never used to untill some Richard Cranium came into our operation, let us spend $17K on him and then quit after 2 1/2 months.
Thanks to Jerks like this, we all now get to sign them for initial.

Some people dont understand just how expensive training cost is.
 
I signed a 2 year contract for my Westwind type ($14K). Same reason as above, previous pilot left after 10 months.

2 years is a little long for a training contract. Even the ultra-scumbag operations usually get away with only a 1 year contract. Of course, maybe the company is a great place to work, err, nevermind you did say a 135 operation didn't you.

Thats the only reason that I did'nt mind signing the contract. The company is where I want to be and has a business philosophy that really keeps employees happy and productive. Believe it or not they have near perfect retention rate of employees. People just don't leave and every person I spoke with before accepting the job offer had nothing but good things to say. So, in short I'm very comfortable with my descision and think it's a fair trade for the amount of money they invest into initial flight crew training.

Here is a question.

Say for example, company requests a training contract be signed prior to them sending someone to a major training center like flight safety or simcom. Contract would be 18 months in duration or so

If they laid someone off after a few months due to no work to offer, and they want to recall a few months later if they need a pilot, and that pilot has already moved on, they would have no leg to stand on would they if they then wanted to ask for the money? Especially if the pilot never had given a resignation and had requested to keep working if there was work available.

Seems they would not be able to just lay off a pilot and expect to that pilot to just be available for them in the future whenever they want. I would think once the pilot was laid off, that would pretty end it since continous employment was not offered to the pilot.
 
Correct. The way I read the contract was that if the employee(pilot) that recieved the training chooses at thier own will to terminate employment before the contract time period has elapsed, they will be responsible for the balance. If the pilot is let go by the company then the contract is void and they would not be required to pay.

So, if the company fires you, you can move on and have no further obligation.

At some companies they make you put up a training bond, for which the company will pay you back over a two year period of time......
