I am wondering what the thoughts are on this situation.

I am currently flying with a 135 carrier in a large multi turboprop as pic. I'm flying on demand going to Mexico, US, and Canada. The work is very enjoyable, fun, and don't want to go anywhere right now. However, peering into the future I wonder if going to a regional airline is a good idea. Simply for the sake of the 121 time. It would be a major pay cut to do so. Maybe it would be a better idea to try a 121 cargo operator?

I know the 121 experience is important. However, is it so important that I should leave this job to go get it? I have heard the advice to stay until you get your 1000 TJ PIC. And believe that is sound advice. My goal is to fly for FedEx or Ups.

Thanks for any advice!

PIC v. SIC

Easy choice. Multi turbine PIC doesn't grow on trees. The more you have, the merrier, and it matters not one iota that it is prop time. Enjoying the job and the pay are other good reasons for you to stay where you are, and it being 135 time will look just fine with the airlines.

My $0.02 advice would be to stay and build to your 1000 of turbine PIC. Stay longer until you build at least 2500 if you like the job and money, and you could be SW meat, in time. Good luck with whatever you decide.

stay and build PIC

Too much SIC on a resume doesn't help looking for the next job. Get the minimum 1000 turbine PIC

I agree to stay. Just think which will be more helpful the next time the airlines furlough. Hopefully you won't get caught, but it is good to have a just in case scenerio.

I am in the same boat. I am thinking of jumping to the 121 commuter just to get some 121 time. I have 1200 some hours PIC Turbo Prop but it is in a King Air and many carriers have a 20K plus weight or some heavy criteria.

Eat more.

This is absolutely a no brainer....

Stay put-

121 SIC time is not going to get you anywhere or to the AWA, ATA, Jetblue, SWA's of the industry... You would basically be taking a step backwards with a long time to sit right seat before you can start to once again accumulate "pic time". I would not even waste time thinking about this if I were you.

The above mentioned carriers have hired lot's of guys right from the 135 and 91 ranks and will continue to do so. Take a look at what you will be making as a regional first officer, you will take a big fukcin pay cut... !!

good luck,

PIC v. SIC, and quality of life

You, too, should stay put, for all reasons cited above.

I do not feel that quality of life issues receive enough consideration when considering a job change. Take it from someone who knows, enjoying the job is an important factor when considering a job change. If you dislike your job, then going to work becomes a chore and life is no fun. I realize that many people don't have a choice and life isn't always or supposed to be fun, but if you have a choice, and the people above apparently have them, then you should opt for a job you like. Surprisingly in such situations, career considerations end up taking care of themselves.

Go for whatever makes you happy as far as QOL and pay. I know a guy that left freight runners last year for Comair. He said "In three years I'll be making what I am making now!"

I said, "In three years you won't be making what you are making now, if you stay at your current job!"

"but in three years, I'll be making what I'm making right now!"

Ok, do the math...a bird in the freaking hand is worth at least two or three in the bush...

If you want to be a regional airline pilot, go for it. Suck up what you have to do to make ends meet...but promise me you won't come back here and biatch about your fiscal life a year from now...

Thanks for all the advice guys! Thankfully, what I fly is more than 20k.

Staying sounds like a darn good idea. Esp. for QQL.

135 PIC multi Piston vs 121 SIC Turbine

What about 135 PIC multi piston time vs. 121 SIC?

Does it make sense to stick out the 135 job getting PIC multi time for a little longer so you have some decent multi PIC time? Does multi PIC time ever play a role in upgrade time on 121 carrier even if it's not turbine?

Multi PIC, of any kind, is still better than SIC. You'll look better to the airlines, etc., if you have good, solid multi PIC to offer. 135 is always good operational experience - the type airlines look for.

Good luck with your climb up the ladder.

YIPPIE I have 1001 hrs of PIC turbine finally...Now what?
You more than exceed SW's total mins and you have a 737 type. The answer seems clear-cut, in my $0.02 opinion.

Good luck with your SW interview.
