The engineer is still there. If anything trains could be automated easier than airplanes. Engineers and conductors make as much or more than most major airline pilots and have rest rules as well. Train companies would love to get rid of them but they can't. Not saying it will never happen...
There was a mass email from some HR dude inviting everyone to re-apply. For many this was the only contact. This must be what they are talking about. This whole thing wasn't handled very well. To make things worse RH was personally calling FO guys to offer interviews.
I hear LXJ is offering interviews to furloughed FO guys. Nice move management, bypassing laid-off Flex folks who want to go back. Would have been nice to have some sort of requirement or contract saying they need to recall laid-off employees before going to the street.
My experience in the past 4 years with "contract pilot" websites has been nothing. I have a resume on three website and not one call. All my contract work has come from networking and referrals from friends. Your mileage may vary.
Laid off Flex myself. I did 91 contract which paid well but at times the airplane manager wasn't tending to the planes well which was very frustrating. Ended up at a small charter. I have lots of unscheduled time off but since I live in my home town with the fam it's fine.
Life is hard in...
Be great unfortunately you will be disappointed if that is your expectation. Find out what line pilot pay is and add 10 to 20%. If they pay day rates for pilots you're in worse shape.
Trick is be the chief for what they pay and do contract gigs on the side. Until the place gets big and...
Try Martinaire. They have some BE1900s now. Entry level pay. Cold bases. And I concur with the above. Beech turbo props do well in ice, with the bigger King Airs handling it better due to more powerful engines with the ice vanes open.
Unfortunately that's what is done most of the time; knew a DO once who actually asked what were the odds of having an accident (very small) so why not press on.
Had a pax ask me once why their airplanes never broke down on the road and ours (nice frac operator) broke sometimes. I explained...
Was the owner a midget? Given the size of fractional airplanes how could the guy, I assume it was a guy, pee on the tires. Even with a geewiz one would have to kneel quite a bit to pee on the tire. That said I agree with you; you can't pee on me without paying extra.
It's simply lack of respect for pilots and safety from the owners and that comes from their lack of experience with aviation. Their pilot/manager should have explained this to them however it wasn't done. The view is that if the plane can be flown single pilot why waste the money for the other...
Do not sign a retro-active contract. If they made a good faith gesture to you and you to them that should suffice. If they decide to change the terms that's their problem. Signing the contract sets you up for grief down the road should things sour.
They have already lost their trust in...
Don't do it! The margins are small, workload very high. Dealing with the feds is very frustrating. For every one step forward they begrudge you they knock you two steps back.
If you absolutely have to do it go as a single pilot single airplane outfit; no manuals or management personnel...
