    Southwest ETOPS job vacancy

The SWA employee newsletter this month talked about the WiFi internet we're (finally) installing on our aircraft. It mentioned our system is a satellite based internet system vs. a land based system, for "overwater capability." So ETOPS is probably at the "officially a rumor" stage. But yeah...

    What Would You Do ?

It sounds like you like where you are... which means you can be pickier about where you go next. That's an enviable position! But you don't have to decide until you actually have a choice (IOW a job offer). In the meantime, fall back to your "other choice" ...just staying where you are...

    Operating in Heavy Snow/Ice conditions

-Don't do ANY single engine taxiis unless braking is GOOD or better. -Taxi SLOW, and be sure you're really on pavement. -If you're using antiskid on landing, try not to change your brake pedal pressures much. Every time you change your brake pedal pressure some antiskid systems (such as on the...

    MKE Airport hotels

Actually, "The Terminal" is a pretty cool bar that opened only 2-3 years ago in what used to be a truck terminal behind "The Landmark." The Landmark is a somewhat more well known, very old bar. None of them have strippers... you're probably thinking of "The Airport Lounge" next door. I'm...

Southwest submits proposal to acquire Frontier Airlines

The press release is written like it's a buyout, but when seniority lists are combined (and I DON'T KNOW if that's even likely), it's more like a merger from a pilot's perspective. This could be great for all, or it could suck for some.

Southwest submits proposal to acquire Frontier Airlines

Mergers are frequently messy. As a junior SWA guy I'm pretty uneasy about this. HOWEVER, maybe the F9 pilots can teach the SWA pilots how to use automation, and fly a little international, since our flight ops management doesn't seem to understand it yet. That's something to look forward to!

    Southwest Hiring...

Lampshade your source is wrong. The "furloughs" rumor is a gross exaggeration on our current level of staffing, which would be "overstaffed" according to many respectable sources. I can't remember where I saw it, but we're probably overstaffed by 300 or so pilots if you do the math. In an...

Southwest mulls move to 3rd major US airport

Although CLT is a big market that I would expect SWA to serve soon (like in the next 3 years), I don't consider this the "big market" that is being hinted at. I think the "big market" is definitely ATL. It's really the last large metropolis in the US that we don't have some sort of presence or...

    8-12" forcast at MDW

Actually SWA, along with only a few other operators, can land with 3000 RVR on 31C. Of course, 3000 RVR is still pretty lame. The snow is supposed to be worse farther north in SE Wisconsin (where I live), so your drive up there (and my drive down from there tomorrow) is probably the best reason...

    SWA Satellite Bases?

The definition varies depending on who you talk to. Generally it's where you would have a "sub" base to your "real" base... for example, you'd be based in Chicago and bid on lines that all start and end in Kansas City (no commute necessary if you live in Kansas City). Sometimes your seniority in...

What is more important, Labor friendly NMB and bankruptcy judges or tax cuts?

The Fair Tax Plan is supposed to be cost neutral... so it's not a tax cut or raise. Arguments on excessive or wasteful spending by governments should be a separate issue. (and yes, government does a lot of very necessary things)

What is more important, Labor friendly NMB and bankruptcy judges or tax cuts?

Not exactly. Under the Fair Tax plan, everyone would receive a rebate to reimburse us for the taxes on the basic consumables like food... so if you were so poor and were "starving," you would continue to live tax free. If you were "poor" and still bought an iPod (a luxury item), you pay taxes on...

W2 and Quality of life at Southwest

Here's how I did, with mostly living in base: Year 1: $62k or so with about 14-15 days off a month. Year 2: $102k with about 15-16 days off a month. Year 3 (this year): probably $105-110k with about 16-19 days off a month. I aspire to be a slacker. I'm about 2/3 of the way down the list in MDW...

W2 and Quality of life at Southwest

I feel for the new guys, too... I've done the whole commute halfway across the country for another airline, and know that kills any schedule. But I think SWA is worth it even if you live on the east coast... if you can accept the fact that you'll commute for 8 months or more and won't have time...

SWA Contract - How good is it?

I don't think it's quite that bad (at least not publicly). It's not like when I worked at Skyway and they threatened to shift all the flying to Mesa unless we accepted their lame*** contract. However, "expanding" internationally with only codeshare partners rather than SWA aircraft (and pilots)...

    SWA & Unemployed

I'll second that. I had to resign from ATA since I was furloughed, and also give SWA a copy of my resignation from my employer that I had just left... SWA apparently mailed/faxed both of them to these former employers. And, yes, I've heard of a few AAers going back about 10-18 months ago.

    SWA in EWR this morning!

Distance doesn't matter since we're not hub-and-spoke... DAL and HOU are way close, for example, and even LAS and OAK aren't that far apart. What really matters is the number of RONing aircraft, and number of flights. And, no, I don't miss EWR either.

    SWA & Unemployed

I do NOT know the answer for sure, but I wouldn't worry about it much. Every once in a while I wonder if it would HELP you get the interview... but maybe that's wishful thinking for all my furloughed friends. And like MilPilot said, the big thing you need to worry about is recent experience...

Furlough coming up? Which would you do?

Back in 2005 I got furloughed from ATA. My biggest mistake in my furlough was accepting a job too quickly that wasn't a good fit for me. So let me get this straight... if NetJets DOESN'T hire you, if you take either of your options right now you'd leave them both for law school? If NetJets DOES...

Rumored SWA ALK code share Jan '09

I'm pretty sure WestJet is a David Neeleman airline... didn't he go there (or start it) after Morris, and before jetBlue? I think I remember him signing a "no competition" clause when he left SWA, so he went to Canada to stay in the industry. Kinda makes you wonder if we'll do business with...
