The following letter was attributed to an Alaska Air pilot on another forum. I like the guy! I'd hate to have him pissed off at me...

Babs:
You were so right on when you scolded the general on TV for using the term,
"ma'am," instead of "Senator". After all, in the military, "ma'am" is a
term of respect when addressing a female of superior rank or position. The
general was totally wrong. You are not a person of superior rank or
position. You are a member of one of the world's most corrupt
organizations, the U.S. Senate, equaled only by the U.S. House of
Representatives.

Congress is a cesspool of liars, thieves, inside traders, traitors, drunks
(one who killed a staffer, yet is still revered), criminals, and other low
level swine who, as individuals (not all, but many), will do anything to
enhance their lives, fortunes and power, all at the expense of the People
of the United States and its Constitution, in order to be continually
re-elected. Many democrats even want American troops killed by releasing
photographs. How many of
you could honestly say, "We pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred
honor"? None? One? Two?

Your reaction to the general shows several things. First is your abysmal
ignorance of all things military. Your treatment of the general shows you
to be an elitist of the worst kind. When the general entered the military
(as most of us who served) he wrote the government a blank check, offering
his life to protect your derrière, now safely and comfortably ensconced in
a 20 thousand dollar leather chair, paid for by the general's taxes. You
repaid him for this
by humiliating him in front of millions.

Second is your puerile character, lack of sophistication, and arrogance,
which borders on the hubristic. This display of brattish behavior shows you
to be a virago, termagant, harridan, nag, scold or shrew, unfit for your
position, regardless of the support of the unwashed, uneducated masses who
have made California into the laughing stock of the
nation.

What I am writing, are the same thoughts countless millions of Americans
have toward Congress, but who lack the energy, ability or time to convey
them. Regardless of their thoughts, most realize that politicians are
pretty much the same, and will vote for the one who will bring home the
most bacon, even if they do consider how corrupt that person is. Lord Acton
(1834 - 1902) so aptly charged, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power
corrupts absolutely."

Unbeknownst to you and your colleagues, "Mr. Power" has had his way with
all of you, and we are all the worse for it.
Finally Senator, I, too, have a title. It is "Right Wing Extremist
Potential Terrorist Threat." It is not of my choosing, but was given to me
by your Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano. And you were
offended by "ma'am"?

Have a fine day. Cheers!

Who killed a staffer?

Shoulda been a wider bridge. Everybody knows that.
She shoulda taken swimming lesson as a kid. Everybody knows that.

He is a Kennedy, after all.

"Teddy dear, I think I might be pregnant"

"Don't worry Mary Jo, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it"

"Frankly, I don't know what it is about California, but we seem to have a
strange urge to elect really obnoxious women to high office. I'm not
bragging, you understand, but no other state, including Maine, even comes
close. When it comes to sending left-wing dingbats to Washington, we're
number one. There's no getting around the fact that the last time anyone saw
the likes of Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi, they were
stirring a cauldron when the curtain went up on 'Macbeth'. The three of them
are like jackasses who happen to possess the gift of speech. You don't know
if you should condemn them for their stupidity or simply marvel at their
ability to form words."

Bravo!

My sentiments exactly, Mr. Hill (whether you're real or not).

What do you expect? They all go to work in a city that had a mayor sent to Fedral prison for drugs and prostitution who, upon his release, they promptly REELECTED!!! If anything needs cleaning out it's the ranks of the voters in this country. There was a reason (partially) besides racism that originally you had to be a white male landowner to vote in this country.

Too bad 'Mr. Hill' didn't put as much effort into research (or remember what he was taught in basic) as he did this letter.

Ma'am is used in the military as a form of address to female Commissioned Officers and Warrant Officers, but shouldn't be used outside of the military as an official form of address.

When talking to a Senator, the accepted form of address is "Senator____". Within the senate they may refer to themselves as "the gentleman/gentlewoman from____", or "the distinguished Senator from_____", but never as "Sir" or "Ma'am".

I thought they tought these things in basic training Mr. Hill. :D

Even in the military ma'am is used for Junior officers (O1 to O4) anything above will be called by the rank they wear. A senator is addressed as "senator". Sources are OPNAVINST, COMDINST, and AFI. I am sure the army has something as well. The General messed up and as a true soldier he corrected his mistake with dignity. Kudos to the general he is an upstanding man.

20 years as a Navy officer and I used Ma'am for any women who outranked me from O-1 through O-9 (never met a woman 4 star, so no O-10). I used it while on the Joint Staff with Army, AF and Marine senior and flag/general officers too. Also used it when briefing Congresswomen, Senators and Amabassadors as well as SES level civilians. No one ever had a problem with it.

I believe the proper term of address for the likes of Boxer is a word that rhymes with stunt.

These people have completely lost touch with whom they are supposed to be serving.

Barbara boxer has been a great senator in my opinion. She's served a long time the interests of the people who elect her- myself included. If you have any problem with that-take it up with the voters.

As for the white male landowner vote- wow is my initial response- my 2nd is read up on Jefferson's arguments for compulsory education- "Our democracy depends upon an informed constituency" - the motivation for education investment is that the vote would be diminished by the ignorant.

Probably rolling over in his grave at the likes of GWBush and palin.

As for this guys diatribe. It's the equivalent of a Jerry springer ghetto rant with a better vocabulary. no sources- no complaint other than a valid, albeit small rebuke-

California the laughing stock huh? It's the 6th largest economy in the world all by itself. It's a mess- but you still want us in the union. And the mess certainly isn't boxer's fault.

Again- a fantastic senator.
