Very interesting, RAH's contract ends in 2014.....same year TSA plans on acquiring and flying their new MRJ's. United may have just sent a clear message on their new, "direct" competition in Denver.

This is all speculation and is only opinion and not flame bait. Just saying interesting coincidence.

If I'm a United Employee and this is my management teams' best strategy then its time to get some competent management.

Lets see, expect Trans States to get this aircraft up and running on time to replace SA. First, I've worked at a few airlines, and the only place that was more of a charlie foxtrot than Republic was Trans States. Second, to bet that a company that hasn't built an airliner since the sixties, and has never built a jet airliner, will get this flying in a timely manner is foolish.

This was published in the WSJ about the Trans States deal:

"Mitsubishi Aircraft announced major design changes to the MRJ last month, delaying its planned first flight by six months until the second quarter of 2012."

Just launched the thing and they already have production delays. If the speculation here is true, UA employees better hope their crack management team has a plan B, or this is likely to blow up in their faces.

My guess is TSA NEVER intends to fly the aircraft, this is solely an investment strategy and they'll sell off their slots as the airplane nears completion. TSA might also be repositioning itself to be sold off, offering slots and options on a brand new aircraft. It adds assets to the company even though it's way in the future. Maybe watch for a "For Sale" sign on the company or just selling off the options as 2014 nears to keep them afloat if/when UAL dumps them or goes under.

100 MRJ's is more than 3 times the number of E Jets that S5 flies for United. S5 may get booted, but 100 airframes should scare a lot more people than just those at S5.
