Hey guys.....I'm looking to nonrev out to SFO then rent a convertible to cruise down Highway 1 to the LA area. Any secret way to get a great deal here? All of the major companies seem to have 1 way drop off fees and I'd sure like to dodge that if possible. Plus, the choice of convertibles is lame. Chrysler Sebring?? Come on....

Any help appreciated....

My nieghbor does this on a regular occasion. He rents the car from which ever place he wants, it doesn't matter which one. Then he goes where he needs to. Enroute, he calls the rental place and tells them that he had to take the car because of family emergency, all flights were sold out and he will drop it off at the dealer near his house.
He's never been charged for a one-way rental, just the daily rate.

But, this would be a pure lie!

Do not lie!

How would you feel if you owned the same car rental company/usiness and one (or many) of your customer lied to you and caused you financial loss?

(It amazes me how pilots on these boards boast of 'integrity' and 'professionalism', etc., but at the same time so many of you blatantly post information on how to 'deceive'!)

I'm on FlyBunny's side: lying and cheating is not the way to go. Do you really want to set that example for your kids?

My suggestion is to ask at the FBO for a crew member rate. Never done it in California, but plenty of times in Florida (MCO-FLL, et al). At the terminal, there was a drop charge - but not for pilots. That is a legitimate way around the charge.

I did LAX to SFO with a Dollar car and it was $19 a day, no one way fees. I was going to use Hertz, but I checked two days before the trip and Dollar gave me a great deal. Just check in periodically and you might luck out and find a great deal.
