That's about right, last number I saw was a bit over 29000. VW just won Dakkar with a TDI Touareg.

And yeah, what the VW/Audi group has done is pretty amazing. Between the Jetta and the new A3 TDI there are finally some great diesels out there. The goal is to get VW's lineup back to what it used to be, where a TDI engine is available in almost every car.

This is where I fear the incessantly lobbied congress is destroying the US automotive industry with the maniacal push to electric. Personally, I think electric is a total fallacy and will directly cause what automotive industry we have left to fail. Bio-diesel is a sure way to achieve foreign oil independance with proven technology and none of the absurd limitations of electric and yet, no one here wants to talk about it. I don't get it.

You kind of hit it on the head, Porsche and that awful little boxster (granted, I'm biased) is king. It all comes down to price point and market, I know a lot of VW folks are hopeful. I really think they'll have a 2 seater within a year or two, probably diesel-it's not an enormous threat to Porsche and if they can keep it different it'll be allowed.

At least one really nice piece of news is that the Scirocco is coming to the US-finally. I haven't driven it yet but I have been up close and I can't wait.

The media mentiions it because people are curious as to what typ[e of individual engages in this type of conduct.

Ones occupation says a lot about an individual. From this one question, you can generally determine a persons income, education, lifestyle, neighborhood, class, sensibilities, etc.

Yep, The media’s true priority is not to report accurate information or to satisfy our curiosities. Actually, it’s money. They tell you what they think you need to here to make you more curious. They want to get as many viewers intrigued as possible. They try to bring the viewers to the decision needed to stimulate the minds of as many as possible.

In this case, the reporter feels that by mentioning the fact that this freak is an airline pilot that they will have a better story line. The reporter thinks that most folks find pilots to be professional, well trusted, and admired figures that act in good faith everyday. Then the reporter just shows how this pervert tried to have sex with a young boy and he has accomplished his goal of getting viewer attention and raising curiosity. Just before the audience has a moment to digest the facts and create an opinion the reporter generally says something like “now this” meaning for the viewer to stop thinking on his own about this subject and to begin on the next story.

The book. Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman does a great job of describing this type of media strategy and gives plenty of examples of how the news media makes a profit in controlling our thoughts about a story.

I really cut back on the TV after reading that book.

I have an intense dislike for the media, but they do usually seem to include occupations in these types of cases. I remember that show with Chris Hanson they pointed out who was a doctor, or engineer etc...It only seems to be with professions, though. You never hear them say, "A 35 year old gas station attendant was arrested today..."

Unfortunately, that's because society has been trained to think that the gas station attendant would be the more likely culprit. To see someone of power and prestige taken down, makes the plebs wet in their pants. Our society trains us to believe that those who are in the limelight of life, with power and wealth are somehow more ethical. That the gas station attendant or the uneducated menial worker who toils in obscurity is evil, not trustworthy, dangerous, etc. We have been made to think these stereotypes fit.

Pilot, dentist, lawyer, or whatever, I'm always surprised to hear of people with much to lose blow their whole careers on stupidity.

I think it's more because they think the wealthy people are evil and we as pilots are all wealthy in their eyes. They love to see the evil get what they deserve.
