If you cannot see a "representative surface" you kind of have no choice but to open the main cabin door vs. looking out an overwing exit. Not a fan of GOJET, but I am not going to criticize this crew.

Pretty sure the FAA and Chief pilots would not be a fan of

1. Getting out of the cockpit on a taxiway
2. Opening an emergency exit, disarming a slide, leaving the door open, etc
3. having a person on an active taxiway
 
I think I saw a GoJet guy today on a active taxiway scrapping ice off the wings leading edge with his GoJet ID.

He said that was in their Ops Specs and fully legal to do.
 
I have heard of having to have an inspection done from the outside if you miss a holdover time and it is still precipitating. Whenever it happened to me (once in my career), I just went back to the de-ice pad. Getting out of an aircraft on an active taxi-way is dangerous and stupid.

I'll bet that he turned his ID over so you could not see that he was from Hojets.
 
A slightly different situation at my fractional being we dont have a cockpit door, but it is our procedure that yes, if we go over the holdover time we have to get out and do a tactile check under certain conditions. If that happens when we are 1st or 2nd in the money line at JFK, then thats where it happens.
