On taxiway Delta at ORD, long line for take off, light freezing rain, blowing snow..

"Ground, Lindburgh XXX"
"Go ahead for ground"
"Yeah, this is Lindburgh XXX, we need to find a spot to open the cabin door to check our wings"

LONGGGGGGG SILENCE

"Umm, you want to get out of the airplane?"

LonGGGGGGG Silence

"Yeah, we need to check the wings for ice"

Ground, "By actually getting out of the plane?"

No answer now. Silence again

Ground," We will have to get back to you, let me know if you want to go back to the gate."

Hint hint

Should have let him get out right as the plow truck rolled by:laugh:

I seem to remember hearing that a Lufthansa flight at JFK asked ground to stop somewhere to close a panel that was open. Ground told them they could do it right on Bravo, but they just wanted to see if the first officer could get out of the 747 on his own.

About 3-4 years ago at ASA we had the rule if you went outside your holder over time. And really we still do. But due to the rules about people needed in the cabin and Cpt post 911 we can't do it. We could still have a "qualified" person come up to the airplane and check the wing, but its not really ever feasible.

If you cannot see a "representative surface" you kind of have no choice but to open the main cabin door vs. looking out an overwing exit. Not a fan of GOJET, but I am not going to criticize this crew.

Maybe--he was following his POH or Standard Practice. Whether a street captain(whatever that is) or not, compliance is mandatory.

With which rules do you choose to comply? OVER----

Said the go jet pilot..........................

Would have loved to hear this happen in JFK during rush hour.

Pretty sure the FAA and Chief pilots would not be a fan of

1. Getting out of the cockpit on a taxiway
2. Opening an emergency exit, disarming a slide, leaving the door open, etc
3. having a person on an active taxiway

I think I saw a GoJet guy today on a active taxiway scrapping ice off the wings leading edge with his GoJet ID.

He said that was in their Ops Specs and fully legal to do.

I have heard of having to have an inspection done from the outside if you miss a holdover time and it is still precipitating. Whenever it happened to me (once in my career), I just went back to the de-ice pad. Getting out of an aircraft on an active taxi-way is dangerous and stupid.

I'll bet that he turned his ID over so you could not see that he was from Hojets.

A slightly different situation at my fractional being we dont have a cockpit door, but it is our procedure that yes, if we go over the holdover time we have to get out and do a tactile check under certain conditions. If that happens when we are 1st or 2nd in the money line at JFK, then thats where it happens.
