I've recently relocated to DC for law school. I'd like to find a GA airport relatively close to DC proper where I could rent once in awhile. I don't have a car, so something accessible by public transportation (Even if I need to connect with a cab ride) would be ideal. I really just want somewhere I can rent a 172/Warrior/Archer and fly for an hour or so ever now and then. I'm busy with school and short on funds, so I won't be doing anything regularly, making an equity-based flying club not an option. Any suggestions?

I would say Montgomery County Airpark, Gaithersburg, MD (GAI) north of DC is probably your best bet in terms of access via public transportation- subway (metro) to the burbs followed by a bus line I believe. Search for an older thread earlier this year where someone may be more specific.

If you drive from downtown, Potomac Airfield in Friendly, MD (VKX) south of DC is the closest active GA airport and still has a little school/club called ATC Flight Training Center. Maybe if you hook up with some $200 hamburger pilot you could still get to an airport and hitch a ride out without public transport. Freeway airport East of DC in Bowie, MD is just off of route 50 but I can't recall if there is any bus line to there, and Leesburg, VA and Manassas, VA are kind of far (unless driving) and remote to say the least.

What happened to Hyde Field (Washington Executive) in Clinton, MD.

It's just a couple miles from Potomic, and easier to access.

I don't know the status of flight schools at W32 but VKX still operates with at least one club/school. I used to fly out of VKX pre-911 but haven't in years- am looking into it though as I'd like to get back into GA. The 'potomac airfield' website has information on the SFAR compliance steps but once you go through that background check hoop you are good to go.
