Leaving my 135 job for a 121 job in 2 weeks. What will I need to buy, what works best for all you other guys?

-Jepps Binders, how many? What kind, 1", 2"?
-Flight case, what kind?
-Suit case, what kind?
-Headset, I have a DC, will that be OK?

If I've missed anything please let me know. Any other advice for an airline newbie would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Be patient and wait til class starts. They will tell you exactly what you need to provide and what the compny provides.

As for suitcase...standard black roll-a-board is industry standard...many many threads on here where people will argue which brand/style is better.

Good luck.

I give it five replies before this thread gets very un-constructive. Bring a sense of humor. And yes, your airline will instruct you what you'll need once you start training. Don't worry about the suitcase and the jepp binders, just focus on passing training.

Don't forget the essentials:

Ipod
Hair gel
Hair dye to frost your spikey tips
Backpack with good shoulder straps
Doc Martens

Can we come up with some new material?

I agree with CRJ Puppy.

You may want to bring a back pack or something to carry all your books around while in training though. If you don't already have a flight case.

Good luck!

you can go cheep several times or you can go quality once. I spent the money on a Scott flight kit and a PNT bag because I know both will last a long long time, they were more money than the 99 dollar costco or travelpro bag and the 29 dollar office depot flight case, but I also am not worried about the handle or the wheels breaking in the middle of a 4 day either.

I think it’s funny how the people who lecture about professionalism are the first people to become unprofessional about a situation.

This WAS a constructive thread.

Thank you everyone else for the input.

Sorry, Frosty, if I offended you. I'll try to be more constructive next time!;)

Isn't this about the point where we should see a certain epithet about a certain regional carrier known for its substandard working conditions and shady business practices?

I hope you've chosen wisely Hollywood.

I got an aluminum flight case off ebay for $60. Still works after 3 years and hoping it will last 'til EFB arrives. It works in the CRJ. I saw an identical one at Harbor Freight for $29.97

If you are coming to the CRJ (50,70,90,whatever), be careful buying a flight case. Some of the bigger ones won't fit. Sorry, I don't remember exactly what size will work.

Since you didn't specify a price range, I'm going to suggest you go all out at www.coyoteworks.net. Great product and a great bunch of people. The binders cost less than the Jepp binders and are top notch quality. Their flight cases will destroy the airplane before a single stitch gives.

1. Both companies I've worked for have given me binders for the Jepps. Some guys do buy some small binders from office depot and put the airports for the day or trip in them and leave the big binder in the bag.

2. I went ahead and bought an expensive flight kit (about 300 bucks) and have had it going on 6 years and it still works great. And that things been thru hell. I ran it over once (long day and I swore I put it in my trunk)...About 1 or 2 times a year I go thru it and tighten up the nuts and bolts. Only thing that broke on it was the handle, but a few eye hooks and about 6 inches of chain makes a great handle.

3. I use ones that cost about 100 to 150. I usually get 2 to 3 years out of each bag. I might buy one of those 400 metal ones, but they are heavy empty and my flight kit is already heavy so my laziness says I need at least one bag to be light. Anyways you will be basically living out of that suitcase so the main thing is to make sure that you are really happy with the way all of the zippers and pockets are set up.

4. Some companies provide nice headsets. Both companies I've worked for have crappy headsets in the planes that no one uses. I've used my DC's in 3 diff planes and haven't had an issue.

The Coyote works stuff is nice, but I caution you on their binders. A 2" binder is damn near 3" thick so you cant fit as many in the bag. The Jepp 2" binders are actually 2" thick(well maybe very slightly more). At XJT I carry two 2" jepp binders and our CFM(2") and I can fit all three across one side of my bag. There are guys who have the 2" Coyote binders who can not carry them the same way and their bags are super cramped.

So you're new to this business? So what airline hired you? I doubt a major did and I'd like to know what regional hired you since you posted this on the regional forum? You must have one crappy 135 job if you're leaving it for an uncertain 121 gig. Who's hiring at this time or is this flamebait?

You are a rarity these days, you actually sound excited and happy about leaving a 135 gig and going to a regional. Not many of you left.

Hope you enjoy the airline thing.

you forgot to mention Sunglasses for placing on the forehead as ya walk through the airport.

Anyway, welcome to the circus. Pucker your *********************************** up tight.

in closing.....MESA SUCKS!!!!

KY-Jelly, Warming Type is preferred. 55 gallon drum will get you through 1st year pay. 2nd year pay will allow 1 gallon jugs more costly, but easier to carry!
