Anyone? I know that mesaba was, dont know if they still are, and I think that colgan is, would like to get more info, please. Thanks!
 
Gulfstream for sure, huh? I suppose they have been hiring street captains for years. Any idea about whether or not mesaba is still doing this?

OK, I'll take the bait. Why do you want to be a street captain? You know what that entails, right?
 
Actually, I dont, but Ive got a buddy that was just furloughed from a small 73 operator that is looking for a place to go for a bit. Sounds like there is some negative connotation implied with the streetcaptain deal? Should there be concern for anyone wanting to do this?
Not trying to flamebait here, I just dont see anything wrong with this.

Not trying to flamebait here, I just dont see anything wrong with this.

I wouldn't say its a negative connotation as much as a difficult road. First, it's extremely hard to type in a new airplane at a new company. Fire hose? Try two at once. And the FAA is notoriously hard on street captain type rides. I've heard bust rates in the 90 percentile for first attempt. Not a good thing to have on your record.

Then if "your buddy" passes training "he" will be at the bottom of a seniority list for a long, long time. That means reserve. And the FOs who are ahead of you will keep upgrading and bumping you back.

The negative connotation comes in because most of the companies who would hire a street captain are not the highest in repute. I mean Gulfstream? Not so good on a resume. And the pay is hardly worth it. Finally, lots of people see it as cheating rather than paying your dues. I mean you say you... uh "your buddy", got furloughed, but still, a lot of people see the street captain thing as trying to back door your way in.

"I" see. Thanks for your input. "I" personally like it here at my company, but "my buddy" doesnt have a job. Kidding aside, are failure rates really that high for this stuff? I suppose everyone fails every checkride on something, its just how important the examiner feels that issue is, or perhaps how badly his wife angered him that morning.
 
I didn't hear peep about any of the new Mesaba captains having a problem.
 
Here's your peep. In the 2nd class of XJ street CA's, there were quite a few failures on orals and checkrides for experienced pilots. Rightfully, it's a tough course to go through.
 
A guy that just got done with sim over there said there were quite a few street captains from the 135 side of things, too. That would add another level to the whole deal for sure.
 
Ok as a Street Captain for XJ...
Training is tough but not impossible, in my class of 9 we had one guy fail his oral and then pass it. The class after there were 3 out of 9 or 10 that failed their orals. 2 out of the 3 passed the second time, the 1 out of the 3 left all together b/c he came to realize that it just really wasnt what he wanted.
What one guy said in a previous that there was a 90% failure rate. I'm gonna have to go can call BS on that one. That's not true, my self and another individual in class were the only ones with previous SAAB experience so that helped a bit, the other 7 had never been in a SAAB and passed just fine. So saying that the FAA is notoriously hard with Street Captains is also BS. Atleas at MESABA everyone (instructors/check airmen) Were all very very very very fair and professionla.
As for being in reserve forever? MAYBE SO, MAYBE NO. I was in the 1st New hire class at XJ and there were quite a few more class after mine with Street captains, so Now I have a very big number of Junior captains under me. Then again what's worst? Having a line and never upgrading? or being on reserve but logging 121 PIC? Once again it all depends on where you're commuting from? what your goals are? What your attitude is like? and how much you like to complain. So far everyone at XJ has been professional and curtious.

If you mean for Street captain? the I wouldn't really cal lit strong, but I know the've hired a few more guys/gals and placed them into a pool.

Almost! I start IOE this coming week. Well I'm still waiting on the call from Crew Scheduling, but I'm excited and ready to head back to the Sky I recon.
 
So now that you are where you want to be(mem), can you be displaced from base? I would assume that you may have quite the pile of street captains underneath you that will keep you moving closer to a line perhaps.
 
Any of those street captains at XJ going to be able to hold MSP?
 
According to general consensus, no. On top of that, it would seem that Mesaba is through hiring street captains for now. That could change, but there are quite a few qualified fos that have the opportunity to bid right now, and until this bid pans out, seems things will go back to the traditional advancement.

Pardon my ignorace, but shouldn't you just have street captains below you? Are FO's that are getting hired after you now taking the upgrade? I guess I don't see how you could have a big number of captains below you.

Because they hired quite a bit more street captains after me. I have many STREET captains below me. There are around 30 street captains below me in Memphis.
