Best Use of PNF during Interview Sim Eval

What would you consider over/under utilization of the PNF while in the interview sim evaluation?

What sim and for who? For the CRJ, just standard callouts with no coaching (10 degrees heading to go on steep turns, 1000 to level off, etc). PNF makes FCP inputs, probably not going to be many though. Course adjustments for VOR tracking mainly. I suppose you could do CDI or glideslope deviation call outs but in an interview environment, that can be considered coaching.

If your PNF happens to be General Lee, he would probably be best utilized as a paper weight, or maybe even a door stop.

You could use the PNF to copy ATC instructions, tune/identify frequencies, bug heading, alt, take controls while you set up for and approach.

Well... if you have a sim eval... then that answers the skirt question... As much as we'd love to see a gal manuever into the sim with a skirt on.... go for the suit pants!!

But.... why are you interviewing at a regional that requires a sim eval?? That is so 1990's and earlier!!

For what it's worth I've done 5 sim evals on interviews, at Regionals and Majors. First of all, any professionally done sim eval will include your PNF or the evaluator telling you what they expect/how the PNF can be utilized. This isn't "just another line flight" so it's silly to pretend that it is.

Second, it is pretty much impossible to "overuse" your PNF. Because of nerves you won't delegate as well as you normally would. Further, if he feels he's being used to the extent that your skills can't be evaluated, he'll just stop helping.

In short there is almost no risk of overusing a sim eval PNF. Have him verify instructions, spin bugs, hell, fine tune a power setting, make a latte, whatever.

get him/her to give you some piss if you get a drug test b/c you were so horribly bad on your sim ride that you must have been high and/or drunk. remember...friends help you move...true friends help you move a body...(just ask the guy in Aruba).

My opinion: use the other guy/gal in the front office until the examiner/interviewer says not to. Your primary focus is on flying the airplane, if the other occupant can help in any way, ask them to. If the examiner thinks its too much, they will tell you.

The flip side of that coin, that is, if you are the PM/PNF, do everything to help the person in the other seat. I'd rather have the examiner/interviewer tell me not to do so much as a PNF/PM, than to have the examiner/interviewer tell the PF to not ask for too much help.

This 121 flying thing is a team sport: If one wins, we both win.

FWIW, I've seen a woman in a skirt maneuver herself into the pilot seat. It was everything you've dreamed it would be.

(ps, "gal" is so 1950s! )

As for the sim eval, I think most of the regionals still require one if you don't have 121 time.
