Kalitta Air Eyes Domestic Venture

Kalitta Air is considering the launch of a new domestic air freight charter airline to replace Kitty Hawk Airlines, which ceased scheduled service in early November after failing to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

On Jan. 9, officials of Kalitta Air briefed over 55 members of the Air Forwarders Association on a conference call on the proposed Aug. 15, 2008 launch of a nine aircraft charter airline based at Kitty Hawk's former facility at Ft. Wayne, Ind.

The fleet will consist of 727-200s, A300s and the possibility of a 70 Series DC8. The airline will operate four nights per week and include road feeder service to major cities. The airline will provide only overnight, first-come service.

Connie Kalitta, founder and CEO of Kalitta Air, will own and operate Kalitta Air Freight, but participating forwarders will be required to provide seed money upfront that will be returned if the venture does not get off the ground. If, however, the airline is launched but fails after a short time, the seed money will not be returned.

Each forwarder will also be required to pay a fixed monthly fee based on the16 cities served initially. No more specific information on the fee arrangement was provided.

The cost to Mr. Kalitta "will be in the range of $15 million for acquisition of assets (aircraft) and the associated start up costs," said the proposal.

The forwarders will be asked to form a working committee to work with the principles on the new airline. "In addition, we are asking them to participate in a rebate system that will be based on profit," said Bob Hunter, a Kalitta Air principal, who is spearheading the new venture, and will become president if the charter airline is launched. "If this business is profitable, the participants will participate in some of the profit," Hunter said.

Hunter stressed that the new venture, "will be a completely separate entity that has nothing to do with any of the other Kalitta companies," he said.

That friggin Connie could make a buck with nothing more than a rock in his hand.

Now he may take that rock and knock you in the head with it and then steal your wallet but he'll make the buck in the end.

For all the good, bad and the ugly about Connie and his operations you have to admire the brass balls that guy has...

That is why they are advertizing for up to 12 727 Crews. Also sounds like they are going to pick up the Express Net assests sitting here at YIP, and prehaps Murray's 70 series.

Probably be called Kalitta Charters Three

I think on that news release it said, "
Kalitta Air Freight"

Too bad Bob Hunter will be running it.

Didn't Bob Hunter leave Kalitta/AIF in disgrace (fired?) 1996-ish over somebook keeping discrepancies? I can't believe the ole man is going to let Hunter back in. I wonder if Hunter's crony Jeff Connery is involved in this.

Bob will be the only thing to keep it from working.

Sample conversation of what is going on at therest of the freight companies:

Why the hell didn't we buy that hub just so Connie couldn't have it!!!

Because no one except Connie has any money?

or everyone else was smart enough not to go near it. If KHA couldn't make it work why will Kalitta? They couldn't cut costs or find any synergies that KHA didn't have going for them...

Its Connie's revenge on KittyHawk. He'll buy bottom dollar a/c from leasing companies that don't want them, hire pilots at low wages, and is make the freight forwarders put up their own money so everyone assumes some risk.

It would seem that Connie is buying the Express.net certificate and aircraft to get things going. This along with the Kitty Hawk revenge factor is pure irony. The Express.net certificate is the former Trans Con certificate that Connie gave to his son Scott 1995-ish. When Trans Con was losing money and Scott had no interest he sold it to Express.net probably for more than the $15 he is spending to get it back.

Over the course of 30 years, Kalitta built up an airline that was among the 25 most profitable at the time, in the world. It took Kitty Hawk a year and a half to run it into the ground. Kalitta bought back, started with a few airplanes, and in less than seven years is more profitable with a fraction of the airplanes...once more, and his assets are growing and making money. He's expanding, where others are shutting their doors or liquidating.

How can Kalitta make it go where others can't? He's always managed. Owning all the aircraft outright, helps. Right, wrong, or backwards, I wouldn't underestimate his ability to make a company go.
