Delta and ASA close call in ATL

Just heard on the radio ASA crossed the runway while Delta was on takeoff roll. ATL tower estimated 1500ft separation calling it an extremely close call.

If they are halfway down the runway at 100+ kts and someone darts out on the runway they have to make a tough decision. It looks like they made the right one and probably, when the facts come out are to be commended.

Planes Nearly Collide on Hartsfield Runway
(WSB Radio) - Only three seconds separated two flights at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and a runway accident. Air Traffic Control spokesman Dan Ronan tells News/Talk 750 WSB that ASA Flight 876 crossed without permission onto the runway of departing Delta Flight 261.
The Delta flight was too far into its takeoff roll, Ronan says, to stop. The regional jet managed to get across the runway but the controllers at Hartsfield estimate that the two flights came to within about three seconds or 1500 feet of a collision or accident.
250 passengers could have been affected. Both planes continued on their way without further incident.
Just yesterday, there were reports that air traffic controllers are in the middle of a staffing emergency among air traffic controllers in the most congested areas of the country, including Atlanta!
Patrick Forrey, president of the air traffic controllers union, said it's unsafe to fly in Atlanta at peak travel times. There were 30 runway incursions at Hartsfield Jackson in the past 4 years.
Forrey added controllers are short-staffed, fatigued, and burned out and are retiring at dangerous levels.

Didn't Delta taxi off the taxiway in CLE a couple of weeks ago? Maybe they need to work on their ground operations. If this keeps up an operating loss will be the least of their worries.

Sweet technique....."visually clearing" the runway.......yeah, no one else does that, just the AF.

I'm sure most carriers use it....but apparently not all of them. Lots of carriers taxi on taxiways as well.

Same goes for the AF these days. It's amazing who they let graduate UPT now. I flew with someone who just couldn't land the Herk without nearly punching the mains through the fuselage, and this was in mission qual. She's flying a desk down at Guard Headquarters.
Sound like someone's thinks he has a birth-right to Delta but, A)got turned down or B)can't get an interview.

Um, I would assume it's more the ASA pilots' fault for crossing an active runway. Much more important to clear the runway when you are crossing it than when you are taking off!

FWIW the ASA crew was quite senior (if that flight number quoted above was correct).

I knew guys like you in the AF. A desk jockey universally hated by all those who actually are competent to do the day to day missions. Sure you have to fly to stay current but it's considered hazardous duty by the crew unfortunate enough to have been scheduled with you. Passed over for supervisory roles time and again but really it's because "your timing was just bad".... Command.............forgetaboutit. You couldn't get a puppy to follow you to a bowl of puppy chow. You really don't want to know what they're saying about you when you're not around.

Haven't even interviewed with DAL. I'm hoping not to. Hopefully I can go straight to FedEx, UPS, or SWA. I'll go to DAL if I have to if the big paying jobs aren't availiable at that time.

All of this is a few years away. I have a contract with the AF to fly to the 20 year point. A contract is a thing that two or more parties agree upon for the doing a specific job. Thought some of the DAL folks might want to know that since they don't seem to mind their company breaking their contract.

This could have been much worse.....looks like our aircraft was taxiing out for departure..... my guess is there was a bunch of "briefing" going on.... that is what the FAA and the GO types do to try and fix these problems..... which results in more of these situations..... too much "briefing" and not enough paying attention..... I don't care if the TO ITT is 765 or 764.... I care about not hitting someone.....

Delta, ASA Plane Nearly Collide At Atlanta Airport

ATLANTA -- A Delta 757 and an Atlantic Southeast regional jet came within three seconds of a disastrous runway collision Friday at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Without clearance from the tower, ASA flight 876 to Greensboro, N.C. crossed runway 27-right at 10:10 a.m. just as Delta flight 261 roared down that same runway, taking off for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
The 757 was too far into its takeoff to shut down and came within 1,250 feet of the smaller jet, Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Kathleen Bergen confirmed to WSB-TV Channel 2.
A representative of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association said the planes were three seconds from a collision.
Officials at both the FAA and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association said the ASA pilot failed to follow instructions from controllers.
The ASA pilot had been told to wait until the Delta flight took off before crossing the runway, according to Doug Church, Director of Communications for NATCA.
The pilot repeated the instructions back to the tower, but proceeded across the runway; directly into the path of the Delta jet, Church added.
Both flights continued on to their destinations. No passengers were injured.
