Has msoft flt sim improved much?

If I'm lucky, I hope to be interviewing soon at nwa. From what I've read, people with a lot of glass time have more trouble when thrown into the "steam gauge sim"! I happen to fall into the heavy glass time. I plan on firing up the old flt sim 98!!! Its helped in the past, yet I'm wondering if the newer softwares would benefit at all. Graphics I dont so much care about, yet if the panels are more realistic (say to a 747 or a dc-9) and functionable, might be worth it. Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm wondering if it would be more worth your while to spend a few hundred dollars on an hour or two in a level C steam gauge sim at fllight safety or alteon. probably not a bad investment if you're applying to one of the big five.

PMDG makes a 747-400 sim for FS2004 which my understanding is pretty accurate. Nothing for the DC9 that I am aware of.

Elite (www.flyelite.com) has an IFR training sim for the MD-80/90 series. It is far better than FSX on a top of the line quad processor setup, and is far better on a P3 or higher machine. You don't get the jerkiness in the gages that is routine for FSX.

If you want FS, FS04 is better than FSX for computers that are not P4 and above, but FSX works very nicely with some steam gage jet add-ons. As you'll be scanning instruments, turn down the other scenic junk and FSX will really fly even on P4 machines. Either is worth the upgrade from FS98.

I used MSFS 2004 while preparing for the Compass sim ride in a 727. I downloaded a 727 from flightsim.com. It doesn't do much for actual flying skills, though if you can fly Flight Simulator you can fly anything. It helped me get used to the layout of steam gauges. If nothing else it gave me confidence since I otherwise wouldn't know what the panel of a 727 looks like.

Awesome MD-80 DC-9 sim

This is the dc9-80 circa 1979. It is unbeliveable that it is an add-on to fs2004 or fsx. It is by far the most accurate thing I have ever seen in Fltsim. Callouts, v-speed charts, perferctly replacated systems, even the old-ass Omega "FMS"

That is a piece of junk, and you might as well use a freeware model. The MD80 you linked is stellar. This DC-9 is not.

FYI - Alteon Flight Crew Training in Long Beach CA is going out of business at the end of year. I called to schedule a for fun sim ride in their B-737-800 NG level D sim. They have a nice program where you can rent any one of their sims for 200.00 an hour. I guess their training business was doing poorly so they are closing shop.

How does that make me clueless? Why would you want to pay 200.00 dollars an hour for a sim ride? We get enough of that for free.
