I am not sure what else I can say to tell you folks that hyd's don't matter when the aircraft is skidding or in a controlled crash state.

Gotta disagree here. Rudder for directional control right after touchdown is fairly important, even if the dunlops aint danglin and you're leaving skidmarks like you just had the biscuits and gravy at the speedline, Imma fly that beotch till all the metal stops moving.
 
a standby electric pump is good for maintaining parking brake pressure on the ground and that's about it. there's absolutely no way it will be capable of actuating flight controls or steering the nosewheel on a transport category airplane.

Actually the stby hyd pump on the Q400 can power the entire #1 system. Brakes, Antiskid, Rudder (lower pcu), flaps, ptu, inboard roll spoilers and elevator (outer pcu).

I think his pernt was something running off of a chemical source then through a solid state inverter would be too weak to power a pump for that kind of motive flow, unless the batt-rays in question weighed a billion pounds and the inverter had a heat sink of the same mass... as opposed to the AC power from gens on a running engine.

But hey- Russian's tone totally changed. SOMEthing came out of this hot air.

Oh, you won the debate with that point! Get real. Compare this landing to the second crew's work and you will understand what I am talking about here. Also, I recommend going back and reading the Airplane Flying Handbook. Along with that, you can take the time to apply some "common sense" flying techniques to the accident video. From that you will see what was done wrong.

This is how we learn. Stop trying to insist that sitting here praising this crews poor airmanship is better than analyzing cause. You wouldn't be saying any of this if the second flight crashed and hurt more innocent people. I won't say "sorry" because there is reasoning behind my statements. Other posters with appropriate backgrounds have noted that. Whether or not you agree with that is your passengers problem, not mine.

I would hang around and debate, but it's pointless when the other person is so completely out of the loop as it is obvious that you are. The Dash 8 is not like flying a Cessna! Talking about this with you is like trying to discuss systems with the pax in back.

I would hate to be a crewmember who has had an accident or incident to deal with and who's career is jeopardized as it is, and then have to listen to someone in their Monday Night QB jersey sitting at home, debating MY actions on an airplane that he knows nothing about.

Even worse, I would hate to be up front with you in the event of an emergency; the best I could hope for is to knock you out before you killed us all.

I totally agree with you. Russky is a Russian/eastern European immigrant communist aficionado. Btw, I’m an immigrant myself but I find it disgusting to see the murderous Lenin’s picture on her avatar which apparently makes her feel more ‘at home’ – using her reasoning I guess every German immigrant should be using Hitler as his/her avatar? :eek:

The thing is this discussion would have been SO much better had she phrased her opinion in a different way. For example:

“Folks, what do you think about the Dash accident in Denmark? Would you keep both engines running or would you shut them down? I am thinking that maybe shutting them down would make more sense because….’
But I know nothing about that airplane so are there any Dash experts out there? What do y’all think???”

Instead she chose to slander (sp?) the crew to make her point:

"They did a horrible job with that landing. Very unprofessional, very bad airmenship.

Say what you want. The flying pilot slammed it in and never secured the engines. No respect for the safety of the passengers.

Shame on you SAS pilots."

People are missing a KEY PIECE OF INFO HERE.
1.) WATCH THE VIDEO CAREFULLY. TAILSTRIKE OCCURS AT 6 deg. PITCH UP.

Once that right main SNAPPED VIOLENTLY, the first part of the aircraft to touch was...you guessed it!
THE TAIL!

2.) The tail was the first thing to touch. Once that drag began, there was NO WAY TO HOLD THE RIGHT WING UP. Too much drag, not enough aerodynamic forces acting on the aileron....

RUSSIAN: AT THIS POINT YOU ARE OUT OF CONTROL and it doesn't matter what you try to do, engine secured or not.

3.) ALSO: Funny things happen on emergency egresses: namely, PANIC. It is usually here that injuries occur, because passengers rush and push and shove, and some twist their ankles, smack their heads and whatnot.

THE PILOTS COULD NOT HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB WITH THIS GIVEN THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF THIS AIRCRAFT. I applaud them.

SUGGESTING A COMPLETE ENGINE SHUTDOWN, whether in the flare or not, IS ABSOLUTELY LUDICROUS> I HOPE I NEVER FLY ON THIS CHICK'S AIRPLANE, SHE'LL KILL ME.

Actually I started the thread/video, but it was not with regards to insult!(more in awe of how strong the bird was). The insult to the crew came in with the first reply to my post. Personally, after many,many years of flying the dash 8's (100's,200's &300's). I think the SAS pilots did a nice job with out further compounding the emergency. (as was suggested here) For being a little turbo prop the Dash has some pretty complicated ("intricate" & "unique" maybe better words) systems and miss managing them will bite you. Question for the rest of the posters here; how was it determined that Ruskie was or is a female? (I'm just curious not chauvinistic..... I'll fly with a chimpanzee if it does it's job right and follows policy). Some interesting things came about from this post and I want to thank everyone for the entertainment value of it.

Happy self induced dual engine failure/shut down landings to everyone!
