I had a quick question to you all about making a lateral move in the industry. Right now, im flying for Comair and love it but I hate the commute to JFK and I dont want to sit reserve forever in CVG. I was thinking about making a switch to either Pinnacle or Mesaba just to be at home in Detroit. The only reason i would be changing would be for a better QOL. Is this move "frowned" upon in the industry? or would any future employers have a problem with leaving a company after a relatively short time? thanks for all the input

Apply to SkyWest.

Don't they have a base at MKE?

It's closer.

Fine...apply to Mesa then.

As long as you can quantify why you made the switch nobody will look down on the decision. Being able to drive to work is a powerful motivater and the paycut to enjoy this benfit is not a paycut at all.

I made a lateral move to get away from the commute. Having a wife and kids makes it worthwhile. I have no regrets at all. I finish a trip, get on the bus back to the parking lot and drive home.

However, I had just under a year invested when I bailed out.

thanks for the input. Is there any sort of unwritten rule about how long you should stay at one place before you leave? or do most employers assume that not everyone will be there over a year?

I'm in the exact same position as you. While at work I think it's great. While I'm trying to commute, I do not feel the same. I think it's worth it to switch if it means you can drive to work.

Good luck.

How long have you been at Comair? Doesn't sound like you'd be giving up all that much seniority. If I were in your shoes, living in Detroit with the growth that Mesaba is getting, it be an easy decision. I don't think it be a problem at all down the road with a future employer, especially if you spend a number of years at Mesaba ( or Pinnacle).

Not sure how much time you have or how close to upgrade you are. If you upgrade at Comair, I would imagine you would be stuck on reserve commuting as well. With the number of pilots needed at XJ, they won't care that you were at Comair a short time, especially if you will be bidding DTW. In H.R's eyes, it is likely for you to stay longer and have a longer commitment to XJ because you are at home. I'm not sure about 9E's movement in seniority and whether they are still a quick upgrade or not so I can't say anything about them. Even though XJ is getting airplanes, it will still be a few years for new hires to upgrade, if that's what you are looking for. Bottom line is commuting sucks, no easy way around it. Best move I made was to move to my domicile after 6 years of commuting. The last four years have been great. Much better QOL.

Do you have the time to apply to spirit? I thought they were hiring into DTW as well and on the 320. Might be a longer term plan for you that could payoff better in the end.

Well you as well as anyone knows what a seniority number means to your QOL. If ComAir is not fulfilling your QOL, then by all means go to a place that will. I can't see how anyone could second-guess you. After all, it is your life, so enjoy it.
