I think it is either ASA or ACA flying the 72 into Hilton Head, SC

Can someone please fill me in on any operational restrictions due to runway length, temperature, ZFW etc etc..

I know the Dash 8/100's usually have to bump 5 or so perople in the summer season.

I js out of there once in a while but dont want to show up thinking there are 7 open seats to find out that they need 10

Thanks in advance

Yea, usually we (PDT) will fly out with 34 paxs! Unless there are about 5 kids on board the Jumpseat will be useless.
Good News, I think we go up to 13 flights a day during the summer.

I am curious also what the 72 takes out. We could only carrier out 36-38 depending on pax with the Dash 8 300's.
And where are you ASA folks staying down there? We need some more folks to play volleyball and party at the Tiki Bar!!!!!

I could be wrong. But we used to do 15 a day from CLT in the summer (3 overnighters), but we have reduced it a bunch. Nice overnight, because we used to kept about 7 crews there.

And did anyone fly in there 2 weeks ago? Wow, it was rough! I have flown in there 7 years now and I can honestly say it was one of the worst winds.

i didnt fly that far south but that whole system sucked. At EWR and they were calling the altimeter 28.60.

I have only been once, and that was like the second day. The best I remember we could carry about 40 to 45 peeps out, full boats in. This is unless you get a FO and Capt. that can't read a TLR, then thay get 66 on. As the temps go up, you know what happens. Hope this helps.

Yup, we are limited in what we can take out of Hilton Head. We can carry a full boat in, 66 pax, but never out. Obstacle clearance on climbout is what limits our loads. Obviously things like winds and temps will determine the amount of weight we can carry, but normally it seems like we will be able to carry somewhere around 45-50 people on the way out.

I think it's like a 4000' foot runway. It looks short from the air, but once you are on final it is plenty long.

We stay at a Hilton resort. It is BY FAR the best lodging that I have come across in the service of ASA. The bill I saw was $130 per night. I think that it's the only place to stay on the island, but if a Motel 6 opened up, we would probably be relocated there.

I wasn't flying into Hilton Head on the windy day in question, but I have heard stories. I think that there was some golf tourney that was cancelled/postponed/affected by the winds that day.

Went in there once with 30+ knots across the runway. Banged it on, then burned half a pack of Marlboros after it. When I got back, the captain said something about me being a slang term for a cat.

Shoulda have come in there before they widened the runways at the Head! But 33R at Boston!!! Thats Fun!

Yea, 2 weeks ago it was nasty.... Fo did a great job, but I think both our knees were shaking like hell after we plowed in!! Been awhile since I watched and laughed while someone worked his a$$ off to get us in there!

I can't wait for the summer, I think I spent half of last summer wasted there!

The runways are plenty wide/long as they are. It's the taxiway that needs to be widened. When taxiing to the terminal, there's not a lot of clearance to spare on the wing tips.

Yea, they just widened the runway last year it much better! Doesn't give that illuision that your ref+30 when when u right at ref! It was a thin little thing that runway last year, and yea I beat with the ATR it looks like a wing is going to run thru the tree limbs on the terminal taxi way!

Yup used to only be 65 feet wide. That was sweet.

Man, sry... I will proof read next time!!! lol

4000'? Pfffftttt.....try 3500' usable at CIW in the Caribbean....with the -72, of course.

3500Pfffftttt.. try 2500' usable at BOS 33R with water on both ends of the runway!!! You like apples? How you like them apples!!! Grrrrrrrr...... Get some loser boy!!! lol

It was intended with a sense of humor loser boy. You go into a 2500' strip with an ATR-72? How many people on board is that?......like 10?

That was funny. I could almost see you puffing your chest out!

Loser boy?? So was mine... Didn't you see the LOL!!!! It was joke back at yea!!! Settle down!! It was in a Dash 8...

Remember its all about girth not length!!! ;-)

Truce. Apples and oranges, though. The discussion is concerning the mighty French Tractor. Not the Twin Otter XL. ;)

No Problem!! See what happens when to pilots just throw there sh$t out on the table..... Things get done!!

Twin Otter XL!! I like that!! Only if the Dash still had a fixed gear!!

Cya!

Twotter XL! I love it! I gotta make a bag sticker that says that!

Even 2500 feet is not really a big deal for landing in the Dash. Min demonstrated landing distance in -8 with flaps 35 at max gross landing wieght runs about 1600 feet and a little change. Takeoff from that distance is obviously a tad more interesting... To get max payload (still very restricted) you'd need flaps 15... Not too fun if you bag a motor. You wouldn't like the climb you'd see, I'd wager.

I have flown both the ATR and Dash. Both are good airplanes, and the ATR is better when it comes to being able to take people/bags/gas. When it comes to short feild performance and slow speed handling, the Dash is in a class by itself.

It's ASA ATR 72s.

I've done HXD several times now in the ATR. I was also one of the last ones to make it out on the "windy day".

We haul up to 66 in and never more than 55 out. If it's hot (above 70) we'll take 45-50 out. The loads have been very good, so you can probably forget about being able to jumpseat. While most ASA ATR captains will count kids and massage the numbers to get j/sers on in most places, HXD is not one of them! The ATR is at the edge of its performance envelope. I've had to bump bags twice (ASA refuses to bump people, they'd rather go witn NO BAGS). I've only taken a non-rev once.

I have a reputation for NOT resembling a metaphor for a cat, but I was "max pucker factor" the first time I flew in and out. That runway looks EXTREMELY short and narrow from the window of an ATR 72. We generally make a normal landing (no need to do an EYW carrier landing), but don't be high/fast and get on the brakes and reverse a little harder then normal. The ATR 72 can stop in about 1000 feet at max weight if needed, the stopping power is incredible. On takeoff, I usually let them spool up a bit before releasing the brakes. At 47,000 lbs, we rotated 2/3 of the way down the runway. On taxi, they tell us to maintain the centerline precisely because it's a 9' wingtip clearance.

The night before the "windy day" we had to do the LOC approach with a 15 kt crosswind. That was "interesting". The next afternoon, it was 20 gusting to 30 and the ATR got airborne three times prior to V1/Vr. When we finally took off, the turbulence at 50' was "intense" due to the trees effect. The FO was flying and he did a great job.

It's funny, when we come in and out the people in HXD just stand at the FBO or the fence and watch us like we're a 747. I think the ATR must be the largest scheduled airplane ever to fly in there.

We stay at the Westin, right on the beach. Nice hotel, but very pricey to eat and drink there, even with the 20% off they give us. The hotel won't take us out to eat either. We have a contract with the hotel through August, so we probably won't switch before then.
