I'm scheduled to fly in to Toronto early May. Just wondering if any of you can advise on do's and don'ts.

I have Jepp enroute charts for Toronto, but no approach plates. Don't know yet what airport we're flying in to so your opinion might help where we decide to land. Please tell about landing fees, FBOs, hotels (in Mississauga), car rentals and generally flying in/around Toronto.

I'm taking Seneca V for a three-day trip with few sight-seeing flights for our clients in Toronto.

Thanks.

Airport Choices (with customs):
CYYZ - TORONTO/LESTER B.PEARSON INTERNATIONAL
-The main airport in the area, very busy and expensive. 2 main FBO's. Long runways with ILS's. Slots maybe required depending on time of day. Expensive landing/handling fees. 24 hour customs. Northwest of city but closest airport to Mississauga.

CYKZ - TORONTO/BUTTONVILLE
- Northeast end of the city, 1 FBO. Main runway 15/33 is 3902' with LOC(15) approach as well as GPS and NDB. Limited customs hours.

CYTZ - TORONTO/CITY CENTRE
- Right downtown, accessable by ferry, closed between 2245 to 0645?, 1 or 2 FBO's. Main runway 08/26 is 4000' with an offset LOC and NDB circling approaches. Limited customs hours.

CYHM - HAMILTON
- West of Toronto (45 minutes to downtown or CYYZ normally), no curfew, reasonable landing fees, 3 FBO's. Main runway 12/30 is 10000' with an ILS (12) and LOC (30) approach and NDB(06) and GPS(24) to a 6000' runway 06/24. 24 hour customs.

CYOO - OSHAWA
- East of Toronto (45 minutes to downtown or CYYZ normally), curfew between 2230 to 0630, reasonable landing fees, 2 FBO's. Main runway 12/30 is 4000' with LOC(12) and LOC (B/C)(30) approaches as well as a NBD(04) approach to the 2670' secondary runway 04/22. Limited customs hours.

Hope that helps your initial planning. Let me know if you need anymore info.

Where to stay

Stay at Suites at One King West! Hands down the best hotel in toronto! Free Bentley service around down town. Its about the same price as the airport marriot, and well worth the 20 minute drive downtown!

Canada

The Number for CANPASS is 1-888-226-7277

As far as approach plates, Sporty's has them or get a trip pack from Jep.

A few other tips...
  • Make sure you and pax have a passport
  • Make sure the airplane has an FCC station license
  • Make sure you have a FCC operator permit
  • Make sure the airplane has a US Customs sticker (Can be purchased inbound on the border, but they are not happy when they have to provide this service)
  • Double check your pax that they don't bring in a gun without you knowing it. (It can be done, just a lot of paperwork) I had a pax tell me he didn't bring his normal sidearm on a trip. Didn't know he had it until he got searched at customs...Needless to say the airplane, bags, crew, and pax were thoroughly inspected for hours.
  • Get US Customs Decs before you leave the US (makes them happy when you come back with them already filled out)
  • Have fun.

P.S.

Don't make ANY comments about the Leaf's not making it to the finals!

Go Red Wings!

Oh, yeah, and what BoilerPilot said.

YTZ (city centre) is a great airport, right downtown. Kinda reminds me of Meigs Field in Chicago. Last time I landed there, I walked inside the empty "customes building" picked up a phone on the wall to call them, they asked me how many people I had with me, and that was it. Nobody even came out. Downtown Toronto is a 10 min ferry ride away. If your an AOPA member, there is a ton of stuff on thier website about flying to Canada.

Tipping is impolite? Since when? When I was in Toronto, nobody tipped the strippers onstage, but they were happy to take my US bucks in the back.

Probably that's because your Dollars weren't the only thing they were taking in the back...

Make sure none of your pax have been convicted of DUI or DWI EVER! You can still get in but you need to apply for a one time or multi use waiver. They are expensive and not guarunteed. Canada considers them a fedreal offense as opposed to the US and due to the Passport requirement and new record sharing you WILL get caught. The bad news is they usualy wait till you're there till they tell you must go home! Also if you are traveling with a minor and only one guardian you must have a raised seal notorized letter of authorization from the other Guardian. And check PASSPORTS!!!!

Try this for aerodrome info:
http://www.navcanada.ca/ContentDefi...rportCharts/CanadianAirportCharts_current.pdf

Unfortunately, approach plates are not available online. You have to order it from Sporty's or directly with Nav Canada. www.navcanada.ca. You can also try www.vippilot.com . The equivalent of NOS chart is called CAP and you need CAP4 for Ontario.

CYKZ is serviced by Million Air and you can call them 905-477-8100. They will tell you everything you want to know.

Customs office at CYKZ opens till 2100 local weekdays. Call 1-888-CAN-PASS at least 2 hours prior to arrival.

CYKZ has GNSS and non-precision approaches only. Your GNS530W won't work here. Closest alternate is CYOO. The closest alternate with ILS is CYYZ but it will cost you an arm and a leg to land there. CYHM is close to downtown and has Customs.

Oops! I should have been more specific about the GNS530W. The GNS530W will work here but CYKZ is not certified for VNAV.

Flying into Toronto is as easy as you can make it. Get all your information together well before your flight. Call CANPASS the day that you are leaving. have all their citizenships, DOB's, and full names. Make sure you know exactly what type of business they are doing in Canada and exactly how long they are going to be there. Dont forget to notify US customs prior to departing and also before you reenter the US.(Depending if you are 91/135). As for ease of entry into the various airports, I have never had a problem in any of the airports. Oshawa Hs no de-ice only a broom and a squeegie (good to know in the wintertime). Toronto Pierson is a pain in the butt to De-ice at when it is busy. You have to go to the main Airline De-ice pad and line up with the big boys. The Jepps have specific instructions for the de-ice pad. As for meeting customs when you arrive in CAnada. All you need to do is call CANPASS when you land and give them your arrival time, they will give you a reference # to write down. For me I think I have seen a customs agent abotu 10% of the time I fly there. I hope this helped somewhat.

Thank you all!

Good information and it helped.

Just completed that trip and everything posted on this thread is correct. I will write details later.

Thanks again.
