UPS Hiring Numbers for 2007

These are the Hiring numbers that are currently being mentioned by the people in the Know:

227 pilots to be hired for year 2007

84 have already been hired so far this year.

143 open FO position remian that need to be filled by new hires.

Here are the projected open FO seats that need to be filled:

MD-11 ANC 78 FO's
A-300 6 FO's
B-757 51 FO's (11 SDF, 22 SDFZ, 15 ONT, 3 MIA)
DC-8 5 FO's
747-400 19 FO's

16 of these postions may be filled by the current probationary FE's already on property... Even with the 16 Probation guys getting the upgrade, we still need 143 from now till November.

As with anything at UPS... This will probably change by tomorrow, but for now, its whats being talked about... Now if the age 60 rule changes anytime soon, look for these numbers to change...

Short answer based soley on my own "speculation"

YES!!!

I base my answer off of conversations I have had with "People in the Know" at UPS...

What are the chances of dropping the 1000 turbine pic. Got hired at nwa in the early 90s with about 750 have been a DC10 so/fo and 330 fo. Have lots of intl. just a little short pic and trying to avoid the dreaded DC9 cpt:)

NO...directly from HR. This is a short term requirement till they get the 400 and MD slots filled. After this happens they will probably drop the requirement.
 
Great info, thanks! Now, time for some more questions:
1) How many guranteed days off for both reserve and line holders? What kind of reserve call outs (ie. 4 hrs, more or less?)
To be more specific, for folks at ONT and ANC.
2) Are most trips out of ONT domestic or a mix? How are the trips out of ONT?
3) Overall job satisfaction, including management vs. pilot relationship?
4) Is ONT senior?

3)job satusfaction is good for most of us but c'mon, we're pilots <G> whadda ya expect? the management vs. pilot relationship needs a marriage counsler. Badly. Doesn't effct the day to day job though, you learn to live with it

More questions:
1) How long is newhire training?
2) How is the aircraft/base assigned (ie age, last four, etc.)?
3) Does UPS pay for lodging during training? How much is training pay?
 
1. 5-7 weeks depending on airplane and sim schedules
2. Aircraft based on experience and WTFK. Seniority based on age (oldest is most senior)
3. Your hotel is paid for and new hire pay is $33.33 an hour as far as I know based on a 75 hour guarantee (13 pay periods).
 
Hey, thanks Capt. M. I've never flown civilian cargo, but what is a typical trip on a 75/76 domestic vs. MD/747 international (ie. departure hour-mostly night I assume)? I know, this question is like someone asking me "what is your route?". Explain to your best ability and I'd really appreciate it!

Only because you have the best screenname on FI.

The domestic flying varies. The toughest is probably done by the 757 guys. I am totally making up the following city pairs because I do not want to log to the UPS site right now and look. All times are local. A typical schedule would be to leave ORD around 10 pm and fly to Peoria, stop and upload cargo and arrive in to SDF around 1 am. At that point you sit the sort, which means you get 3-4 hours to sleep, listen to your IPod, watch TV, eat or whatever. We are scheduled to have contractually guaranteed beds by next Spring. For now we have a sleep room full of Lazy Boys. Around 5 am you would leave for a west coast city such as OAK. It would end up being around an 11 hour day. The next night you would do OAK-SDF sit the sort and then Peoria-ORD. Those lines are generally week on week off starting Monday night and ending Saturday morning. The DC-8 and Airbus domestic flying is a lot easier. One Bus line I can think of is ICT-SGF-SDF-SGF-ICT. The 727s are going away. One of the sweetest lines they have is IAH-DFW sit the sort 3 hours and back to IAH. There is also ROA-SDF-ROA. The old 727 lines will probably go to the Bus. You can guess which plane is more junior.

The international stuff involves longer trips. They tend to have long layovers at ANC, HNL, and HKG. The trips are usually around 10 days. The 767s are probably the hardest since they sit the sort in CRK. The MD, and 747s generally due the long haul stuff. Think SDF-ANC-HKG-DXB-BOM-CGN-PHL-SDF. I've never flown intl yet but am transitioning. I'll give you an update in 6 months. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am off the mark.

The MIA and ONT domiciles are unique. Miami does all the SOuth American flying and a lot of daytime flying to SDF. Everyone seems to love the ONT stuff. They do west coast and Hawaii. Hope this helps.
