Does anyone know approx. how many people are sitting in the short stack. I know that there is a hiring slowdown comming, but are the interviews still going to take place over the summer for fall classes.

Thanks

i would guess the short stack stays in the neighborhood of 200-300. I've also heard that hiring will continue around 30+ per month thru the summer months. Hope this helps.

I was in the short stack for approx 10 months. On average it takes anywhere from 6 months to around a year to get the call once being in the "short stack" "good stack" or whatever stack you want to call it. For the summer hiring slowdown, I would imagine it'll be on the longer side of the spectrum than shorter. Good luck...

A recent applicant who gets walked in today can expect a call sometime this fall, per an assistant CP. Hiring is supposed to slow down to 8 per month (yes, that's month, not week) for the summer, then back up to speed this fall.

That's just what I heard the other day, from the CPO, not the schoolhouse, FWIW.

Just walked in a couple of apps. last week. Chief pilot said hiring will indeed slowdown during the summer. It is typical to help cover the summer schedule with instructors from the training department. As usual the fall will see hiring continue like crazy. Interviews will continue, but mainly everyone is already lined up for the interview from now thru summer - according to Chief Pilot

So does that mean if you do not have a interview date right now then it is a good bet that an interview will not happen until fall?

I had my recurrent checkride in the beginning of March and was told training would slow from the 16 per week we have now to 12 every 2 weeks. So yeah, it'll slow down but not 8 per month like last year as I think the company is feeling the crunch now with the short staffing situation we are in. And yes I know, CAL has always been short-staffed, but not to the point of having to JM starting in March.

Last I heard, the Manager of Pilot Recruiting (KD Jost) has been replaced by someone from HR. I'd say hiring is definitely slowing down over there.

Or could it be that the merger with UAL is imminent, so they are slowing down hiring to prepare for that.

Looks like Delta announced their new BOD and the old CEO of NW has been named.

Prediction: DAL/NW merger, then UAL/CAL merger.

Anybody? Tell me where I'm wrong...

I think you're reading a little too much into it. CAL always slows down hiring during the summer (well, has for the last two years).

I hope you're wrong, anyway... :)

KD Jost is going to be a B777 instructor and is about to start training. Ms. Chrsty Nixon is now in charge of interviewing.

In the school house now, KD is going to be a CKA on the 777, after his stint in Guam and the Pilot Recruitment I think he just wanted to fly again. Christy is his replacement, and seems to be running shop very similar to KD. They told us the other day that 24 a month is absolute, 12 every other week, ALL 737 from May to September. Also mentioned the possibility that they slowly increase classes and going to 48 a month in August to get ready for the new 737's. Either way 24 a month is guarenteed according to the Training Dept with a strong possibilty that they will be increasing that. Apparently the shortage isn't only in Pilot, but in Instructors as they has a bunch of new instructors floating around

What percentage of newhires going forward will "likely" go to 737 vs. 757/767 FO? I realize anything can change but percentage estimates would be welcome. I have a friend who might be interviewing soon.

I'm in the schoolhouse now and what we've been hearing from instructors is up to 64/mo. Nobody in the SH is hearing anthing about hiring slowing down much at all. This is all hearsay and rumor so take it with a grain of salt. The last solid info I've seen was slowing to 12/mo for the summer. This was handed out to us during the first week...things appear to be changing for the better.

There's not suppose to be a slow down this summer. Hiring will continue at the present rate. KD came in my new hire class several months ago and said that himself. Unless something has changed since Feb.........

If you go to the CALALPA website and look at the Membership Committee, there's a file called "Membership News" that says we're going to be training 24 new-hires a month during the summer.

FWIW, a friend of mine that I sponsored was called last week to interview on April 26 for an October class date.

April for October? Are you sure about that? It sounds like hiring will slow down for the summer.

Hows come you don't believe me when I say it?

I've got friends in high places at CAL. I will put in a good word for ya with Larry if ya want.

Anyway, good that you can do the simple math. 24 a month as opposed to 24 a week is a definite slowdown.

I still predict merger.

If so, those without turbine PIC better ask US pilots for coping advice.
If someone without 1000hrs turbine PIC was furloughed from USAir and wanted a job they would not have had a problem finding one. (With the exception of SWA, FEDEX and UPS)

15 years flying for a major goes a long way. TRUST ME!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I know people at DAL, AirTran, UAL, CAL, AA and AWA/USAir that don't have 1000 PIC.

I got the call 2 weeks ago fo a May 8 class date. I also thought there would be 24 new hires a month through October but when I called to confirm the job offer I was told we were the only class in May. At least if there are only 737 slots that makes my equipment decision pretty easy. EWR Rules!!!

I know a guy who's interviewing mid April and was told he would get a early July class date if offered a position. Also know another guy who just interviewed last week and was offered an early May class.

Please stop the lame merger speculation!

Cal slows hiring every summer. End of story. Some guys just love to stir the pot.
