THis week's sign that the apocalypse is upon us:

This "bill of rights", pasted below has this main point: flights delayed 2 hours -> all pax get 50 bucks. That's going to go over great with a hub in NYC. And with their $39 fares, you litterally can get paid to fly.

This mickey mouse operation drops the ball like no airline hardly ever has, then passes a financially suicidal bill of rights that other airlines will be pressured by congress to respond to, all when it was at no fault to the other airlines. The whole frickin reason this industry is so late is airlines like jetblue are shoving shiny new planes into crowded airports when other airlines are shrinking domestically. So the weak link hurts everyone else, when the weak link made the problems to begin with.

We even have USAtoday running front page delay stories THAT TOOK PLACE 2 months ago.

First the pathetic 190 rates, now this.

CANCELLATIONS

All customers whose flight is cancelled by JetBlue will, at the customer's option, receive a full refund or reaccomodation on a future JetBlue flight at no additional charge or fare. If JetBlue cancels a flight within 12 hours of scheduled departure and the cancellation is due to a Controllable Irregularity, JetBlue will also provide the customer with a Voucher valid for future travel on JetBlue in the amount paid to JetBlue for the customer's roundtrip.





DEPARTURE DELAYS

  1. Customers whose flight is delayed prior to scheduled departure for 1-2 hours due to a Controllable Irregularity are entitled to a $25 Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue.
  2. Customers whose flight is delayed prior to scheduled departure for 2-4 hours due to a Controllable Irregularity are entitled to a $50 Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue.
  3. Customers whose flight is delayed prior to scheduled departure for 4-6 hours due to a Controllable Irregularity are entitled to a Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue in the amount paid by the customer for the oneway trip.
  4. Customers whose flight is delayed prior to scheduled departure for more than 6 hours due to a Controllable Irregularity are entitled to a Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue in the amount paid by the customer for the roundtrip.




OVERBOOKINGS

Customers who are involuntarily denied boarding shall receive $1,000.



<H4 class=blue2>GROUND DELAYS</H4><H5 class=grey2>For customers who experience a Ground Delay for more than 5 hours, JetBlue will take necessary action so that customers may deplane.



Arrivals:

  1. Customers who experience a Ground Delay on Arrival for 30-60 minutes are entitled to a $25 Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue.
  2. Customers who experience a Ground Delay on Arrival for 1-2 hours are entitled to a $100 Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue.
  3. Customers who experience a Ground Delay on Arrival for 2-3 hours are entitled to a Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue in the amount paid by the customer for the oneway trip.
  4. Customers who experience a Ground Delay on Arrival for more than 3 hours are entitled to a Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue in the amount paid by the customer for the roundtrip.
Departures:

  1. Customers who experience a Ground Delay on Departure for 3-4 hours are entitled to a $100 Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue.
  2. Customers who experience a Ground Delay on Departure for more than 4 hours are entitled to a Voucher good for future travel on JetBlue in the amount paid by the customer for the roundtrip.

IMHO, the day the airlines died was the day de-regulation was signed by Jimmy Carter in 1978.

Airline pay, benefits, pensions, work rules, quality of life and prestige (yes, even the glamour) have been under attack since that day. It was the day that an industry previously catering to a small group of business/luxury passengers was turned into a razor thin margin Wal-Mart of the skies serving the great un-washed masses.

I believe re-regulation is on the horizon, especially (god forbid) if another terrorist incident happens with a transport category airplane, since no insurance company in the world will write a policy to protect them, and the only alternative will be for the government to cover the airlines like they did after 9/11.

This will be the only way passenger carrying employees can recoup the pay, benefits and lifestyle that has been in decline since 1978. Selling slots at LGA is only the first shot over the bow, a "passenger bill of rights", the next. The unintended consequences are unimaginable.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I feel your pain. Unfortunately, the general public does not. Most economists will tell you that deregulation has been an unqualified success story -- more people flying, for less money, more safely than at any time in history (you can make an argument that the safety aspect is still regulated, however.)

The only people who have suffered are airline employees and shareholders.

read the part of "cotrollable" . ATC and weather are not "controllable delays". customers delayed due to weather or Atc ( as in 99.99% of the time) get pizza, wich is what they get now.

JB does not overbook, so the $1,000 overbooking penalty means nothing.

not charging any fees or offering a refund if the flight gets cancel is something every airline does , JB just puts it in writting in plain view.

the 12 hour cancelation voucher deal is again " controllable ", so it excludes ATC and Weather cancelations.

this won't cost JB much, every airline does pretty much the same , but they are not smart enough to make a big deal out of it to make their customer feel better and get some much needed( for JB) damage control.

the only thing that I can see a bit of an expense with is the $25 voucher for a wait of more than 30 minutes to get to your gate upon arrival, but those vouchers need to be redeemed within 12 months in non discounted/non special sale tickets.
 
I think the $1000.00 charge for overbooking is brilliant. JetBlue has never over-booked a flight in their history, so it won't cost them a dime. It will however pressure the other airlines who make it a common practice to over-book to re-think their policy.
 
Wow....I seriously thought that airline pilots were smart enought to see through news media hype....I guess I was wrong. You fell for it too.
