WASHINGTON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate lawmakers said on Tuesday they would more closely examine potential airline mergers, including the hostile bid for Delta Air Lines Inc.(DALRQ.PK: Quote, Profile , Research) by US Airways Group Inc. (LCC.N: Quote, Profile , Research)
The Commerce Committee said it would hold a hearing on airline consolidation on Jan. 24. The panel did not release a witness list and a spokeswoman would not say if airline chief executives would be called to testify. Lawmakers in both houses have expressed concern about the potential impact of new consolidation on consumers, especially the potential for higher fares and more erosion of service to small communities.

"I think we want to understand from the airlines what's happening here," Sen. Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat and member of the commerce panel, said in an interview.
"I'm concerned about any additional proposals by large carriers. I don't think we need less competition. I think we need more. From the standpoint of consumers I don't think it's beneficial to see some of the largest carriers marry up," Dorgan said.
Dorgan said he wants to hear from the airlines themselves as well as Justice and Transportation Department regulators who would review any formal proposals.
Sources have said United Airlines, a unit of UAL Corp. (UAUA.O: Quote, Profile , Research) and Continental Airlines (CAL.N: Quote, Profile , Research) are in preliminary talks about a merger. In November, US Airways made an unsolicited offer for larger Delta, which is bankrupt. Delta management rejected the $8.7 billion bid.

Separately, Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWACQ.PK: Quote, Profile , Research) wants to evaluate strategic alternatives, including a merger. Continental is seen as a potential partner.
The House of Representatives is also likely to hold hearings, according to congressional aides.

Rep. James Oberstar, a Minnesota Democrat and chairman of the Transportation Committee, has "very strong concerns" about possible negative impacts airline mergers, especially the potential for higher fares, a spokesman said. To ally concerns, the aide said Oberstar would have to be convinced that airline consolidation would generate a general economic upside and not hurt consumers.

Congressional concerns over service and competition, which led to hearings, contributed to the failed merger between United and US Airways in 2001.

The new proposals for consolidation come as the industry is on a financial upswing after slowly emerging from its worst economic downturn.
The leading trade group for big U.S. airlines projected on Tuesday that passenger and cargo carriers will net an estimated $4 billion next year.
The group estimates the major carriers will report 2006 earnings of between $2 billion and $3 billion. The last year the industry made money was 2000, which was also the last year for consecutive annual profits. Big airlines are running much leaner than they were five years ago as industry restructuring, most of it in bankruptcy since 2002, has led to major cost savings and capacity cuts. But the industry acknowledges it must improve its weak credit ratings so it can weather normal economic turbulence -- like fuel price spikes.

And it didn't come from DL management either.....

Merger Mania

Well, it's about time all airline mgt get a reality check with all the consolidation discussion.

Executives have too long been concerned with their own gains and not improved service to passengers and welfare of employees.

Go GL! Go packing Doug Parker!

All for now.

I can't wait to see Doug Parker in front of the Senate or Oberstar. Will he give another statement that he will have to retract the next day? (like his comments to USAToday about giving up on Delta if DL management didn't want to go along with the takeover)

Let me guess? There is NO overlap. Fares will go down (like the AWA and USAir merger where there was hardly any overlap anyway). Riiiiiiight Doug.

Who could possibly believe that airline consolidation could help anyone but the airline executives? Consumers want more choice not less choice - right?

I guess Arpy's $16 million bonus wasn't good enough and he needs bigger bonuses. I'm sure Doug was salivating at Arpy's big bonus - he too can get a big bonus like that if he runs a much bigger airline... Instead, why can't Doug focus on the integration mess on his own plate.

GL, Did you say Oberstar?

You make fun of my name droppings, and then I actually pull up current and new articles with his name attached again. You can make fun all you want, I actually like the publicity. But, I am right.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, but.....

....Doesn't it seem a bit disingenuous on Oberstar's part to suddenly be concerned about higher fares and hurting consumers, when his district has long been under one of the few remaining near-monopolies in air service? I'm sure he's carried NWA's water for years (like any congressman would), and thinks more airline competition is great...so long as it stays away from MSP.

No dog in the fight... How on Earth do you come to that conclusion?

I don't like the current DL/USAir merger scenario, but some type of eventual consolidation might be good.

I'm sick of these low fares! WTF? It's supposed to be a free market; let's merge down to about 2 airlines and extract some serious dollars from people! Airline tickets are a complete folly compared to electricity or prescription drugs. If the ticket prices get too high, people won't travel. That's so easy.

All it's going to take is Mrs. O getting a seat on the USAir BOD and a company-supplied condo for "her" to stay in when she's "conducting business" in PHX.

No one will ever know how big the check is in the envelope in front of her seat when the BOD meets. If Sen. "O" really plays hardball, they'll set up an account in the Turks & Caicos for him.

You guys crack me up! You actually think this process is straight forward and above board... TC

C'mon General, when you gonna look at this like your vote, and decide what you have argued the whole time was wrong, and you changed your mind? I cant wait to start reading your posts down the road stating how you knew the whole time this bid for DL was a good thing, and you just needed time to read over the details.

pppppfffffffffffffffffffttttttttttttttttttttt

“More competition” I find this statement disturbing and upsetting. IMHO the industry does not need more competition. Why do these politicians need to pretend they own the airline industry? They should be spending more time reviewing mergers in the oil industry, not the airlines. I mean seriously, have any of these guys looked at the balance sheet of some of these legacy carriers? Another economic downturn and many airlines will not survive, not that complicated to figure out.

Oberstar, does this clown have a pension? Well, keep the consumers happy with cheap tickets and he keeps his job, in turn keeps his pension. I too want a pension, so raise the price of these tickets! And let the market decide not some clowns in government office.

This merger is a bad one. The USAir/AWA merger was a good one, since the routes fit, the planes fit, and both parties were willing to do it. That is not the case here. Really, it makes little sense but to get rid of the competition, and that is what Congress does not like. No thanks.
