Colors used on US military aircraft...F-15E

I am looking to repaint my airplane and want to use the grey used on the Strike Eagle as the base color. Anyone know where I can get some specs on what colors are used for various airplanes?

I'd suggest calling one of the F-15E maintenance squadrons directly and talking to the enlisted folks who run the paint barn. Just go straight to the source. The squadrons are at Seymour Johnson, Elmendorf, Mountain Home, and Lakenheath. All the military bases have websites where you can get the base operator's number.

If the number starts with a "3", then it is a flat color, "1' is a gloss, and "2' is a semi-flat. I wouldn't suggest that you paint the YAK a flat because it is very hard to keep clean with oil and grease stains. I worked on a Japanese Val dive bomber replica that was painted a flat grey, and it always looked dirty.

If memory serves me correctly, the color number of that paint is 36173 and is manufactured by Deft Chemical.

I got a book that says that they are painted in 36118, basic gunship gray, but they do seem to be darker than that, and they don't fade, like it did on the lizard scheme.

My reference material shows the color as FS36114.

While I have some of you here, these are what I am considering. The first is copied from a La-9 and the only I tend to prefer:

and this was taken from a Yak-9 in Europe. There are a few Yak-50s painted like this and that is why I am leaning towards the one above.

I like Scheme 1. Looks more like something you'd see in the period. Still looks good by today's standards as well. Go for it.

You want a real paint job? Spray with gray primer, turn loose 40 kids with greasy hands to leave prints all over... paint "Navy" down the side and call it a Hornet scheme.

There usually is plenty of greasy hand marks on it...mostly my own. Since I occasionally fly this thing to my Air Guard unit, I don't think the Navy thing would work. I am thinking about adding a travel pod for my golf clubs and then the whole Navy thing would certainly not work!

I have gone tdy several times and watched as the legends in thier own minds put golf clubs in thier travel pods, stuffed cloths in the back of the canopy on a F-16C. I always got a laugh out of it.
