I had a bud got hired earlier this year. My chief pilot saw me in the lounge and told me he "saw my letter" at the DB. I would assume that meant they took them into consideration. Either that or my ego is out of check. :)

Gup

I was just hired in the December DB with ZERO internal recommendations. I'm sure it probably helps, but in by no means a deal breaker.

Good luck!!

SWA is a relational company. Letters help, walk ins help, face to face with the chief pilots help. Everything helps. It is not rocket science. You do not need to have the inside letters, but what it does say is that you have friends that think a lot of you to help you out as well. That they would take the time to help you get hired, and work the rest of their careers with you.

on the flip side, I had a friend with three SWA Capt's who submitted internal letters of rec, finished the interview "feeling like it went well" and got the thin envelope a few weeks later.

You can't use your own preception of the interview as a guage. Everyone walks out of there thinking it went well.

I resembled that above reference too from a few years ago. Plenty of LOR's, good, if not one of the best interviews of my life and I was not one of the 6 guys out of my group of 13 that got an employment offer. 3 friends of mine from my present company with comparable personalities (not blowing my own horn, but good guys, well liked by everyone) and simular back grounds got the job offer after interviewing a few weeks later. I think it was a being in the right place at the right time kind of thing. The interview was still a great experience (except for the thin envelope) and I'll keep on trying...........

Let's look at it a different way. If you have a bud who would be a great fit, what's the best way to get him an interview/job?

I truly believe that it's all on you. Letters will help solidify their decision perhaps, but you really get the job based on you and your own merits. One of the fairest systems out there if you ask me. I believe that if you don't have it or CAN SHOW them that you have it, even God himself couldn't get you the job.
