More MD-80s for Midwest
Midwest Airlines announced on Thursday that it intends to grow its MD-80 fleet. In a press release, Midwest says "it has signed a letter of intent to acquire two additional MD-80 series jet aircraft. The acquisitions will expand Midwest's fleet of MD-80s -- which seat 143-147 passengers in the airline's Saver Service configuration -- from 11 to 13." Midwest plans to put the planes into service in the first half of 2007 after it completes maintenance work and refurbishes the planes. That includes painting them in Midwest Airlines' paint scheme. The company did not announce new routes for the jets, but says it expects to use the MD-80s on long-haul routes from the carrier's Milwaukee hub. The carrier will lease the planes from GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS). So are they still talking A320s or 737s for replacements of the MD-80 fleet?
