Was wondering if anybody have any experience or good insight on what it would be like to commute to Memphis for Wilmington, NC or Raleigh, NC. Thanks in advance!

Purple Reserve Call Out?

wmss:

Sorry to highjack your thread, but..........I'd like to piggyback on your question and ask what is FedEx's reserve call out time? Does FedEx have long/short call reserve?

I'm looking at places to live in the MEM area and want to know how far out I can go.

BTW, my purple friends say FedEx is the shnizzle for commuters.

Commuting in general is pretty easy. There are guys that live in NC and don't have a problem.

Standard MEM is 1.5 hours, which they can sometimes shorten to 1.0 if they let you park right next to the AOC. The other domiciles have 3.0 hour call-out. There is also 24 hour call, but it isn't as good a deal as it sounds.

Specifics for both questions are perfect for your sponsor. With just a few minutes, he/she can look up flights, etc, and give some pretty good info.

Just did a quick search and found a flight or more a day out of Raleigh, but nothing out of Wilmington. Does not seem to be much of a problem, but prior planning may be required.

I think the only place in the U.S. with 3 hour call out is ANC.

Thanks for the info. Was surfing around on the FedEx Pilot Page with my sponor today. Looked pretty good out of Raleigh with Airbus's in the morning and evening. He also mentioned the possibility of a hub being set up out of Greensboro, NC. Can anybody add or detract from that rumor?

A hub is definitely being built in GSO, around 40 gates I believe. It won't be a pilot domicile but there will probably be more flights out of there once the facility is complete.

Here's some info...

Lots of local resistance to the project. More jets = more noise.

Oh yeah, commuting is easy here unless you live in one of the cities near a large AFB or NAS or is only served by a 727 (2 jumpseats).

i.e. Mobile, AL. I never could hold it on the panel of the Boeing - had two former Blue Angels senior to me bidding it!

Any words on how difficult it is to commute from Boston to Memphis for 727 reserve? The ALPA MEC website shows an MD-10 and two Airbus lines per day direct.

Remember too that probably 50% of the lines have a deadhead on each end. You can use the value of the ticket from Memphis to the outstation city (and back) to buy a ticket from your hometown to the outstation city instead. Corporate travel will even book the tickets for you.

You can also book jumpseats 2 weeks in advance, so if you do happen to live near a large FedEx pilot population at least you will know well ahead of time if you need to find another way into the planet for your trip.

Another trick on reserve is to ask for first fly on your first day. You will likely be assigned a trip in advance. If you are commuting online and miss the trip due to a flight delay you are discipline protected. There is no excuse for not being in station for the start of a reserve period.

I don't commute, but I have to say that from everything I have heard this is the easiest place for a commuter in the industry.

Fish: Depends on the day. This month (typical I'm sure):

Mon: 3 flights direct at night, show times between 2003 and 2116 local.
Tue-Fri: 3 direct flights, show 0800, 2003 and 2116
Sat: 1 direct flight, 0714 show
Sun: 1 flight via EWR, 0600 show (EWR leg pretty busy)

So it just depends on when you need to get to the planet. That is a lot of flights though, and this weeks' still show open seats on most of them, so I would think it would be a fairly easy commute.

Might be too specific, but does anyone know the straight skinny on a Nashville-ANC commute? I'm brand-spanking and have been looking at a few options, but since I don't have any real commuting experience I probably don't have a clue as to what is do-able and what is a total arse pain.
So far:
BNA-IND via DL, then Purple to ANC
BNA-MEM via NW, then Purple
Offline all the way via Chicago (UAL) or Minnie (NW)
And of course, drive to MEM, then Purple
Any inputs greatly appreciated.

Would Charleston, SC (CHS) be considered a tough commute?

Yes, CHS would be a tougher one to get online. CHS is Boeing territory right now (could one day grow to a Bus, who knows), which means there are only 2 jumpseats on each flight at most. The widebodys have 3 or 4 in the back plus a couple in the cockpit. Right now there is one flight per day Tue-Sat, with show times at about 0600. Nothing on Sun or Mon. I don't know how many of our guys live in the area, but with an AFB nearby I would imagine there are a few.

If you can get on it, though, it would be a fairly easy commute.

Bump. Any insight on the commute from CRP?
Thanks in advance,

Unfortunately, we don't fly out of Corpus. The bubbas I know that live down than way either drive up to San Antonio and catch our jumpseat there or jump offline out of CRP.
As far as the jumpseat out of SAT, I've heard can be pretty sporty, particularly at the beginning and end of the week.

For those on MD-11 reserve out of ANC...

How easy is it for a junior guy to get a slot and possibly a line out of ANC? What are your schedules like? How many days are you in ANC before heading home? What percentage (roughly) are you working of the total days you're in ANC? ANY idea about the FNG ("Fun" New Guy) MD-11 schedule out of ANC would be sincerely appreciated.

I know Alliance isn't a pilot base, but with a large sort there, how easy is the commute to ANC, MEM or LAX?
