baby needs new shoes, ones that don't have any metal in them. Ones that'll get me thru security. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Bates Lights (military version with leather uppers). They have nylon shanks, not metal, and are light and comfy. No metal detector problems. The insole is synthetic like a running shoe, not leather, so you need some odor eaters to keep them from getting smelly (if you care).

I have a pair of the "Men's Stafford". Have had them for 3 years and LOVE them. No problem with security. They're affordable, stylish, and pretty dam smooooth...

Oh, they're not the MOST comfortable shoe, but they're not uncomfortable. And they don't stink!

although im a poor FO like many of us on here...i recomend a pair of Eccos...theyre gonna cost you 150 or so....but they are as lightweight, comfortable and durable as they come...and they will last you a long long time....well worth the investment

Deer Stag. Availabe at JC Penny for usually around 40 bucks. I'm on my 4th or maybe 5th pair. Once they are broken in, they are the most comfortable shoes I own. They usually last me a year or a little longer before the heel starts to wear at a funny angle, which isn't bad for 40 bucks and the fact that I wear them 10-14 hours a day, 15-17 days a month.

If anyone likes to go the boot route, Ariat makes a nice looking leather roper type boot with a carbon fiber shank. It doesn't set off the detector.

Deerstags fall apart in 6 months and the fake leather can start to look chinsy, and the alternative is many times too expensive. I suggest middle of the road, go to Sears or any department store or shoe store that sells docker's shoes. Forget the name but for 70 bucks theres no metal, real leather and a very comfy slip on style. Perfect look for wearing em out as well, did just that last night.

Doc Martens, without question. Metal free, good traction in the ice and snow, last for years, polish up nicely, resistant to oil and glycol, $85.

I agree, I have had a pair of Deer Stags for almost 2 yrs, they just now are needing to be replaced, which isnt bad if you can wear a pair for 2yrs. SUPER comfy, and cheap as far as shoes go!

Go to Famous Footwear. $50 black pair of Docker's. Waterproof coating, real leather, comfortable, no metal at all.

The only bad thing is the tag sewed inside shoe. It rubs against the bottom of your foot. You have to use a scissors and pull it out, but then you're good to go.

2 pair of deer stag lasted aprox 8 months.

Justin boots style 3170 have lasted me 2 years so far and I dont see them needing to be replaced any time soon. In addition the soles can be replaced. I think they are worth it when there is 6in of snow and you have to do the walk around! DRY FEET!

I've got serious foot issues and Ecco's without a doubt have been the best pair I've found for comfort and durability, mine are 5 years old and still in great shape, plus my "mysterious back pain" I got with other cheap shoes is gone.

What kind of Docs are you talking about, are they all metal-free?

Deer Stags. I've been wearing mine a little over 2 years and now the laces need to be replaced. Other than that, a shine once in awhile and they look great. Comfortable too.

And don't forget cheap. I am a pilot, ya know.

My first pair of Ecco's lasted 4 years. I liked them so much that I bought another pair, but a different style. I mistakenly assumed since my last pair didn't have metal in them that the new ones wouldn't either. I was wrong. They have a big old metal shank. However, the new shoes are so comfortable that I decided to keep them anyways and put up with the security issue.

So, if you do decide to go with the ecco's in my opinion you'll like them, just make sure to ask if they are airport friendly.

I love my Justin Ropers. Bought them a bit wide and inserted Dr. Scholls Gel Inserts (sp?). Yep, I am gellin, and I love it. They really do massage, even when you are sitting. Took one week to break them in. Not good for hot summers, though.

On my second pair after 6 years. They have rubber soles, which are comfortable and don't allow much slip.

I third that one. These are the best and look nice too. Got some Birkenstocks, that although they are vey comfortable, they gave way to the wear and tear after about nine months. Next time will get more Bostonians.

For us wide shoe wearers:

I've tried everything mentioned above and finally found shoes that won't break down in glycol or oil. Wolverine shoes. They come in up to 4E and are fairly wide anyway. www.wolverinebootsandshoes.com Post office uses them. Cut the goofy label off the side and you're good to go.
