Anybody know what took place last month in subic. I heard that one of their MD 11's had a really bad landing. Anyone have details to what took place and how bad the plane got dinged up. Everytime its like hush hush when they crunch one.

Marty

good meaning bad?

"instructordude"

Why don't you try flying into Subic sometime in an MD11..........oh, I just noticed you're just a CFI. Sorry about that - but hey, try it out on your Microsoft Flightsim and get back to us...........

Hopefully it can be fixed. There are'nt too many MD-11's being built anymore (sarcasim). It really is a great airplane but it can be a handfull on landing.

I'm sorry, but he's right - it is embarrassing and unfortunate.

And Subic's a 9000' runway at sea level - with the ILS's it is a non-event, other than the offset. I enjoy going there.

Aimpoint airspeed. It ain't that hard.

How so? Same for the DC10s?

The MD-11 has a third smaller Hor. stab then the DC10 to cut drag and save fuel. The MD-11 is different than the DC10 to land and there have been enough accidents in the landing phase to prove my point. The tail strike is possible in the 10 but unlikely, However; with the stretch in length its not that hard to get the tail on the 11. The only other airplane I know of thats as easy to strike the tail is the long body DC-8. The MD-11 has had several upgrades to its LSAS to minimize landing accidents but there is only so much a computer can do. I had heard some operators of the MD-11 resticted thier crews from manual landings and had the auto land do all landings.

Our guys tell me the DC-10 (and MD-10) land "quite" differently than the MD-11. Much more so than the landing difference between the 757 and 767 (also a common type)

I hear alot of complaining about the common type for the MD-10/11 for this reason (and some others....)

And yeah, we had a tail strike in SFS. However, I'm not sure it warranted the title of "Fed EX Crunches another?"

WOW. I have never heard that before. Maybe some crazy European carrier.

World doesn't seem to have a problem landing the MD-11. Of course, their pilots ONLY land MD-11's, since they don't have any MD-10's.

I had heard it was Korean Air but I have never heard from this from someone who worked for KA to be sure. I have heard rumblings about the common type for the MD-11 and MD-10 and having flown both types I can easily see why. I would not want to back and fourth between the two. And world has had a tail strike on landing. It happened on landing into EINN several years ago. I could be wrong on EINN being the airport but suffice to say it has happened. So far the MD-11 has treated me pretty well but I maintain "there before the grace of God go I" so I will not say anything negative about the crew or the incident.

Mr. instructordude keep in mind flying heavey jets backside of the clock around the world can be very challenging and until you've been there done that you should reserve comment. Maybe your comment was mistaken for critisisim but as your career and knowledge expands you will see there is a lot of unaccountable variables to every situation to take into consideration. And wild specuaclation or early critisisim may only damage a fellow aviators career and should be taken into consideration when making comments.

I would say the DC8 is very easy to tail strike on take off, but fairly difficult to tail strike on landing, unless you are really, really below thresh speed, and even then it takes some effort.

"crazy" european carrier. Any idea which "euro" carrier you're talking about ?

You can always switch those AFS off....

FedEx desperately needs to revisit its training, maintenance and hiring standards. The accident and incident rates for the company are extraordinary even compared to other freight operators.

An autoland should not collapse the gear on an aircraft. Normal landings should not collapse the gear on an aircraft. So its either the pilot, training or maintenance.

What for the 13 year olds?

Know that there is funny!

Maybe you guys should use that program for practice. You never know, it might help. Again, it ain't that hard. Well, it was hard!:p

Have you flown anything over 15000lbs? With your vast experience as an aviator, you would know that things happen even to the most professional pilots.

Im sure you'll do well in the airline industry.
