When does your years of service clock start ticking? Is it upon someone's initial enlistment (to get the TS Clearance paperwork rolling -- I'm non-prior) or upon commissioning?

Example:
Enlistment date: Dec. '02
SUPT date: Dec. '04

Would this example give someone credit for 2 years of service upon starting SUPT? If so, moving that person to the 'Over 2 years' on the Basic Pay charts.

I've heard different opinions on this ...good since you'll be at a higher pay grade, and bad that it'll hurt you further on down your career.

Thanks for any input!

Just what I was looking for, thanks Jim!

The negative I had been told was related to retirement, since during an extended casual status I wouldn't be gaining many points.

Thanks again

You will be a 2Lt / O-1 with 2 years vs 0 years...more $$. Assuming you go to 20 years for retirement...you could retire after 18 years as an officer which means you may or may not have made it to O-5. From my experience of 21+ years in the USAF, 2 years usually won't make much difference. The guys I know who had 4-5 years enlisted often ended up retiring as an O-4 at 20 years TOTAL service.

Retired once...now back again.

Thanks spanky.

Since during that time all I did was fill-out occasional paperwork, it sure feels like a backdoor way to get credit for two years of total service.

Now, if I could only find out my AMS/SUPT dates!

I enlisted in the USMC 9-06-96. When I switch to the Guard this summer, after getting my commission, will I be paid as an O-1 with 6+ yrs time in service? If so, I take it this is something I should remind my unit of...?

It was all reserve. Does that still count for 6+ time in service? Does it qualify me for O-1E?
