I sure hope the I.R.S. doesn't check out that website. I'd hate to think what they'd do to me if they found out what I really make as an instructor. Of course it is a bit discouraging to see that I fall in the 25 percentile bracket......I guess I'll just have to ask for a raise again.............

That's what I used to make as a flight instructor, but I couldn't give it away. No charity would accept it because it was tainted money (they wanted it earned honestly), and what could I do? I just told them I'd rather be earning 14,000 a year and living happily eating top ramen and rat droppings. It was a fight; they insisted on paying me, said a flight instructor is every bit worth eighty five thousand dollars a year. But I held my ground. Said I was intent on lowering the bar for everyone. Please pay me less. In fact, let me pay for my job, let me pay to work here. Not because I love it, but because the devil is in my heart. (onthebeach said so).

They agreed, but only so long as I wear a marines cap, become a democrat, and sign documentation attesting to chemtrails being my work and that I had been forced to make them by the present administration to hide the fact that they bombed the WTC themselves to hide the real truth...that we are all just a duracell battery. A duracell battery to be used by regional jet unions, commissions, and covert agreemement busters to expose scope agreements that are at the heart of our faltering country.

So there you have it, religion, PFT, chemtrails, republicans vs. democrats, conspiracy, regional jet issues and scope, and the collapse of civilization as we know it...and the matrix (which I personally believe explains a whole lot). Kawfey Tawk. Mingle amongst yourselves. Discuss. No big whoop.

I think you may be a little surprised if you inquired about the compensation/perks at some of the larger more well known international training programs that are located in this country. I believe the Lufthansa training program compensates their instructors quite well. I do not recall the name of the international school in the LA area but they also seem to pay more than most. Is this pay the norm with regards to industry average? Probably not but the "better" CFI jobs are still out there if you can find them. Rod Machado also seems to do quite well for himself as a CFI. I think Bobbysamd has some experience with these flight schools and could probably discuss the pay better than I can.

The legalese

"The compensation data does NOT reflect salaries of flight instructors from smaller local flight schools who typically work on an hourly basis and consider the accumulation of airtime the highest priority in their respective careers. "

So in other words, this data doesn't reflect the salaries of 99% of us who are flight instructors. On a side note... the accumlation of airtime....Are we looking for a lot of Cingular rollover minutes?

Yeah right!

Flight instructor pay

Thanx for the intro, Mr. 350. :)

There are CFI jobs that pay well. For example, International Flight Training Academy in Bakersfield is looking for instructors. Here's a link. Starting annual pay is about $30K, plus benies. Quals are actually quite low.

I know the place. I had lunch with one of the bosses there eleven years ago and was to have an interview later that year, and I have a friend who instructed there for a few years. The place is first-class, with excellent facilities and equipment.

Two similar operations are IASCO in Napa, California, and Airline Training Center Arizona in Phoenix (Goodyear). I have first-hand knowledge of these two places as well.

Having written all that, I, too, must question the methodology used to determine the $75K average. Maybe all levels of instructors were thrown in the pot, such as FSI type rating instructors, airline instructors, and aviation university faculty and not just those who instruct in spam cans at FBOs and flight schools.

No disrespect, but how far is 30k going to go in socal?
Fair question. I lived in Northern California for several months about twelve years ago. It is expensive to live in California. I don't know the cost of living in Bakersfield. I'm sure AC will take a good chunk out of your paycheck in the summer. But this is just first-year pay. It gets better each year. Top of scale might be $55K-$60K.

1st year pay for a KLM flight academy (Royal Dutch Airlines) CFI is +/- 50.000E (euro!!) it does't get much more, bud 50k seems fine to me:D

g'day

50K euros converts to U.S. $62,722.25. That is par with what I wrote above - and not shabby pay at all.

Money is just a tool. True happiness can be found without having to pine your life away lusting after material things.

Sell all your worldly goods, walk the path, and good things will come your way.

No, but if you can find a chick with a job, you may just get her to make your Harley payment for you and have a place to crash besides! :D
