XJT training materials:

I'm about to jump into training at XJT, So I was wondering if any of you guys who did training recently had any advice on what books etc.. I should bring with me before I leave?

Everything you need should've been mailed to you (I assume it works like that for new hires). If not, you'll get everything you need on the first day, i.e. FOM, AOM vol. I and II, Jepps, Training Manual. All you need to bring is a few sheets of paper to take notes and maybe some hi-liters. A school-type back pack would be the best thing to bring to carry all of the stuff around. I'm not sure if the company still provides the new hires with flight cases. But if not, there is a pilot supply shop in the Marriot between terminal B and C at the airport where you can buy a good flight case and Jepp binders. You'll need at least two 2" binders and probably one 1" binder. Hope this helps.

You should receive your study materials about a week before class starts and no, the company doesn't provide flight cases anymore.

Unless you got boocoo bucks to throw around, grab a bunch of your classmates (including one with a car) and go to the nearest OfficeDepot. A flight case will set you back about $40 and the small 2" binders about $3-$4 a piece.

If you go to the Stop Over Store (the one in the Marriott), expect to shell out some big cash. They do have some good things you can't find anywhere else, so it's worth a visit. I highly recommend the Zipper Tie. I think it was $12 and is worth every penny.

The training materials should have been given to you during orientation. If they didn't, make sure you call so they can send it to you. You'll need to know the limitations and memory items before you show. Everything else is provided during class. Just bring paper, pens and highlighters... lots of highlighters.

XJet will provide you with everything necessary to pass your ride. If you want to get a headstart or simply have a different explanation of how things work, I recommend this guy's study guide http://home.earthlink.net/~redduck/next.html. I've been flying the ERJ for four years, and still reference this guide before every PC.

How much stuff do you need to carry in your flight kit? I'm wondering how large a kit I will need.

See you in IAH C-12 Bubba!

You will have 2- 2 inch binders completely full of jepps, 1 - 1inch binder completely full of jepps, AOM volume 1 (roughly the same size as a 2 inch binder) enroute charts which come in a fold out thing roughly 1 inch thick, headset (if you choose not to use the ones provided in the airplanes), and a few other small misc things, like flashlight.. mine is 16X8X11, and everything fits fine, with enough room for my laptop.

To all who responded, and to FlyChicaga for his useful questions, thank you!

I went out yesterday, and picked up the 3 EXPENSIVE Jepp binders (yup, everything in aviation is expensive) based on the info you guys gave me.

If there's any last minute stuff, I'll be monitoring this site as I pack for the next 40 days (I'm packing for 2 weeks, and hope they have laundry there)...

I seriously thank you guys for all the awesome input you have provided over the past year or so. You guys/gals are OK!

Today is my first day as a civilian since may of 95. Glad to be out finally, and look forward to seeing all of you out there, and hopefully flying a he11 of alot more!

Matt

Plan on going home most of the weekends. In training, they'll fly you positive space to and from home, which is a nice perk. Most of us stuck around between week 2 and 3 because that's the middle of systems and the start of FTD and it's a good time to catch up on the studying. Also, the hotel has a couple of laundry rooms. Other than that, I went home as often as I could. I packed for about a little more than a week's worth of clothing and did fine. Make sure you bring a swimsuit because you'll be hanging out by the pool a lot. Enjoy the training.
